Silent No More campaign urges Va. governor to enact abortion clinic rules

Silent No More Awareness Campaign

12/5/2011

The Silent No More Awareness Campaign today released a statement in support of the proposed abortion clinic regulations in Virginia that are awaiting the signature of  Gov. Bob McDonnell. The new rules would require clinics to meet hospital standards and undergo  government inspections.

“In the name of ‘choice,’ women have accepted sub-standard care in facilities with less oversight than most veterinarian offices,” said Janet Morana, co-founder of Silent No More and executive director of Priests for Life. “These new regulations would force abortion clinics to function more like hospitals. Now they are just assembly lines of death and grief.”

In February, the State General Assembly approved establishment of new restrictions for the state’s 20 abortion clinics, and in September, the Virginia Board of Health approved the proposed rules. After McDonnell’s review, the regulations are scheduled to go into effect Jan. 1.

“Clinic directors in Virginia say they may have to close if forced to meet these new standards,” said Georgette Forney, co-founder of Silent No More and president of Anglicans for Life. “That is a shocking admission of just how shoddy these facilities are. Many of the women who speak publicly about their abortions as part of our campaign talk of the sub-standard care they received. Women and their unborn children are nothing but commodities. Opposition to these regulations has nothing to do with choice, and everything to do with profit.”

Dr. Alveda King, a spokeswoman for the Silent No More Awareness Campaign and director of African-American Outreach for Priests for Life, urged women to contact Gov. McDonnell’s office at www.governor.virginia.gov to voice their support for the abortion clinic regulations.

“This is not just a pro-life/pro-life issue,” said Dr. King. “This is about protecting women, and everyone who cares about women’s health should support these regulations.”

Since the launch  of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign in 2003, 4,845 women and men have shared their testimonies publicly at over 865 gatherings in 48 states and 10  countries where more than 110,830 attendees have heard the truth about abortion’s negative aftereffects.  More than 10,100 people representing 57 countries are registered to be Silent No More.  Raising awareness about the hurtful aftermath of abortion and the help that is available to cope with the pain are two of the Campaign’s goals.  The Campaign has over 1,300 testimonies posted here, with over 120 that are shared via video!

The Silent No More Awareness Campaign is a joint project of Anglicans for Life and Priests for Life.  For more information, please visit our website: www.SilentNoMoreAwareness.org
