Priests for Life to commemorate Martin Luther King Day

The Beloved Community includes the unborn, Alveda King declares

Priests for Life

ATLANTA -- Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, and Dr. Alveda King, director of African-American Outreach, will be in Atlanta Monday for the national commemorative service marking Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The pro-life partners, who view the pro-life movement as the civil rights movement for the 21st century, have made a tradition of praying with civil rights leaders who gather to celebrate the birthday of Alveda King’s uncle, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Alveda declared, "While it is a priority today to heal race relations, even more urgent is the need to restore equality to children living in the womb. No violence claims more victims than abortion, and the dream of my Uncle ML to end violence and inequality requires that we end the violence of abortion and restore equal protection to these children. That's the focus of the work I do with Fr. Frank Pavone and Priests for Life."

Father Pavone added, "Martin Luther King, Jr. was an advocate for the oppressed, and no group is more oppressed than the children in the womb. It's time for our nation to recognize that the 'Beloved Community' includes the unborn." Father Pavone will join Dr. Alveda King, director of African-American Outreach for Priests for Life at the service.

Alveda and some of the members of her family, as well as other African-American leaders, have signed a statement called "The Beloved Community and the Unborn," which  can be read at Others are welcome to sign it as well.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Annual Commemorative Service will take place at 10 a.m. Monday at Ebenezer Baptist Church Horizon Sanctuary in Atlanta.
