Today, Priests for Life had the following to say after the death of Cardinal Edward Egan:

As former Archbishop of New York Cardinal Edward Egan is laid to rest this week, Priests for Life joins countless others in praying for the repose of his soul. Then-Bishop Egan ordained Fr. Frank Pavone as a deacon in May of 1988.

Priests for Life is grateful for the many occasions on which Cardinal Egan, during his time in New York as well as prior to that, spoke out clearly against the evil of abortion. He also provided written endorsement for our educational efforts, saying, "You can be confident that many priests will find the materials produced by Priests for Life to be useful tools for enriching their pro-life work in our parishes, schools and other ministries."

The Cardinal wanted Fr. Frank to return to work in parishes of the New York Archdiocese in 2001. At that time, he wrote to Fr. Frank stating, "I am most grateful to you for your fine work with Priests for Life since 1993," and a public statement of the Archdiocese of New York stated, "Priests for Life has reached a high level of success. For this, Father Pavone is owed a great deal of thanks and praise for his tireless efforts."

After a process in which Fr. Frank asked to be permitted to follow the call on his conscience to devote his entire life and ministry to protecting children in the womb and ending the violence of abortion, Cardinal Egan granted him excardination from the Archdiocese of New York, with prayerful best wishes for the success of his work.
