Fr. Frank Pavone of Priests for Life Urges Congress to Pass Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act

“It Would be Immoral Not to Support This Bill”

Priests for Life

NEW YORK -- Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today called on the House of Representatives to pass the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 36) this week.

“Not only are five-month-old unborn babies pain-capable, but they are increasingly capable of life outside the womb at that age, too,” said Fr. Pavone.

“The unborn cannot say ‘Ouch!’ but their bodies – through analysis of the anatomical structure, through hormonal stress responses, and through full body responses to stimuli – tell us that they feel pain. This is enough motive for the government to protect them, and the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act will do precisely that.”

The House had been scheduled on January 22 to vote on legislation to protect from abortion unborn babies 20 or more weeks old, but the vote was delayed until this week.

“This week marks the anniversary of abortionist Kermit Gosnell’s murder convictions,” added Fr. Pavone.  “I will never forget sitting in that courtroom listening to the arguments about how a few inches in the location of these babies would mean the difference between guilt and innocence for the man who killed them. By passing the Pain Capable bill this week, Congress can honor the memory of those and countless other babies.”

“Now I have heard some say that because this law does not protect all unborn children, that it is wrong to support it. Somehow they believe we are guilty for not doing what we cannot do. But actually, we would be guilty if we fail to do what we can do, and therefore to support a bill like this, in a form that will secure a majority of “yes” votes, is morally obligatory,” Fr. Pavone explained.

“Today and tomorrow Priests for Life is urging citizens and their Churches to contact their Representatives to urge a YES vote on H.R. 36,” Fr. Pavone concluded
