Pope Francis’s focus on religious liberty offers encouragement to Priests for Life

NEW YORK – When Pope Francis visited the Little Sisters of the Poor as part of his visit to the United States, and spoke repeatedly of the importance of religious freedom in his public addresses, Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, found encouragement and renewed optimism for his organization’s legal challenge to Obamacare’s HHS mandate.

“The Sisters have their case against the HHS mandate, and so do many other groups, including Priests for Life. Our case, one of the very first to be introduced back in 2012, is at the door of the U.S. Supreme Court right now,” Father Pavone noted. “And the Solicitor General has acknowledged that our case, which the Court has consolidated with that of the Archdiocese of Washington, would present the ideal vehicle for the court to decide all the issues presented to the HHS mandate and its so-called ‘accommodation.’

"Moreover, a recent favorable decision by the Eighth Circuit in a case similar to ours now creates a conflict at the circuit court level, making it more likely that the Supreme Court will take up this matter of the religious non-profit organizations and the so-called 'accommodation.' The Pope's visit and his emphasis on religious freedom is a great encouragement in the midst of this.

“We are at a crossroad in the United States. Unless the Supreme Court hears Priests for Life’s legal appeal – or that of one of the myriad other groups that have brought suits – and again reigns in the Obama administration, charities across the nation will face the prospect of closing their doors or requiring their employees to purchase their own insurance.

“Pope Francis reminded us in these past days that America is ‘the home of the free.’  Priests for Life takes those words seriously, and we will continue to fight for the freedom to conduct our business affairs according to our religious beliefs. No matter what the courts rule, we will not obey the HHS mandate.”
