"Abortionists Have Had Their Chance:" Prominent Pro-life Priest Comments on Supreme Court Accepting Texas Abortion Case

NEW YORK  – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today issued the following statement on the Supreme Court’s announcement that it will hear Whole Women’s Health v. Cole, the case challenging Texas’s laws that set health and safety standards for abortion clinics.

“As I have been saying for decades, what happened when abortion was legalized was that back-alley abortionists took their name off the back door and put it on the front door. But they remained unscrupulous and dangerous people. And in this case, they're asking the courts to allow them to continue practicing that way," Fr. Pavone explained.

"States have both the right and the duty to protect women from substandard practices in any aspect of their health care. That's what this is about -- meeting basic health and safety standards. Abortionists have had over four decades to clean up their act. They haven't, and that's because they can't. If people complain that the Texas law will force these facilities to close, that proves our point, not theirs," Fr. Pavone continued.

"Opposing this law by invoking the 'undue burden' standard makes no sense. The Supreme Court certainly does not intend to protect people from an 'undue burden' as a substitute for basic safety and professional standards. To think otherwise reveals a blatant disregard for women," Fr. Pavone concluded.
