Priest to talk about his abortion at March for Life

Silent No More Gathering to Take Place at Supreme Court

Priests for Life

Father Stephen Imbarrato, the first man to talk about his abortion as a member of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, will share his testimony again during the annual gathering in front of the Supreme Court at this Friday’s March for Life.

Much has changed for Father Stephen since 2004, when he first spoke out with the women of Silent No More.

As a young man, long before he discerned a call to the priesthood, Father Stephen did not try to dissuade his girlfriend from aborting their child. Years later, he learned that she was carrying twins, and he has carried the guilt and regret of losing those children. He turned to the Lord in repentance, and eventually took up full-time pro-life work and experienced a call to the priesthood.

He was ordained in 2005 for the Archdiocese of Santa Fe and spent 10 years in parish ministry in Albuquerque, where he also founded two pro-life organizations, Project Defending Life and Protest ABQ. Last year, he transferred leadership of those groups to others, and, with the permission of his bishop, began working full-time with Priests for Life.

On Friday at the March for Life, Father Stephen will carry a sign that says “I Regret Lost Fatherhood” as he marches with the women and men of Silent No More.

“You may ask, how does a man guilty of such a sin become a priest,” Father Stephen said. “But a core mission of the Church has always been to extend the mercy of Jesus, and that mercy was extended to me. The Catholic Church not only ordained me a Catholic priest; the Church forgave a man with an abortion in his past.”

Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, has mentored and worked alongside Father Stephen for many years.

“I have known him and worked with him in the pro-life trenches from before he entered the seminary,” Father Pavone said. “He thinks clearly about the tragedy of abortion and responds courageously to it. The fact that he has lost his own children to abortion makes him a very effective spokesman for Silent No More, and for all the babies killed since the tragedy of Roe v. Wade.”
