Fr. Frank Pavone on the Democrats’ draft platform: “It’s not just the unborn whom Democratic Party leaders disrespect.”

Priests for Life

NEW YORK – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today criticized the Democratic Party’s draft platform language on abortion.
“The Democrats’ draft platform is telling loyal grassroots supporters that unless they favor totally unrestricted and taxpayer financed abortion on demand, they are no longer welcome in the party,” said Fr. Pavone.  “Apparently, it’s not just the unborn whom Democratic Party leaders disrespect, but also rank and file pro-lifers and the handful of Democratic Members of Congress who vote pro-life.”
The Democrat’s draft platform, to be given final approval next week at the party’s national convention, calls for the repeal of all state and federal laws “that impede a woman’s access to abortion.”  It also demands taxpayer funding for abortions and for the nation’s largest abortion business, Planned Parenthood.
“When Democrats controlled Congress not that long ago, there were dozens of Democrats on Capitol Hill who at least said they were pro-life,” stated Fr. Pavone.  “Today, the pro-life Democrat who supports popular measures such as the Hyde Amendment, which restricts federal funding of abortion, and the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which safeguards from abortion unborn babies who are capable of feeling pain, is almost extinct.  And it’s not surprising.”
Fr. Pavone added, “Today, Democratic Party is poised once again to say, at its Convention, that pro-lifers – or even people who just favor parental notification for abortion – have no place in their party. One has to wonder how party leaders expect to gain the support of people they openly purge from their ranks.”
Among the tools which Priests for Life will make available to educate voters in this election is a non-partisan voter guide that compares the positions of the Republican and Democratic platforms on key issues of concern to the electorate. It will be posted at and will be of a similar format to the one issued in 2012.
"People need to understand that when they vote, they not only put individuals into power, but also parties, which carry a whole philosophy. It is a moral obligation not only to vote, but to do so in an informed way, and that includes knowing where the parties stand, and how their platforms have changed over the years," Fr. Pavone concluded.
