Priests for Life Files Friend-of-the-Court Brief in Supreme Court Case

WASHINGTON, D.C.  – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today announced that his organization has filed an amicus curiae brief in NIFLA v. Becerra, the Supreme Court case challenging a California law that would penalize pregnancy resource centers.  The brief was submitted by the Life Legal Defense Fund on behalf of Priests for Life and the Justice Foundation’s Operation Outcry.

“The abortion industry attacks pregnancy resource centers because every time a woman chooses an alternative to abortion, it loses money,” said Fr. Pavone.  “In this case, abortionists had the radical California legislature do their dirty work for them by effectively preventing non-medical centers that assist pregnant women from advertising.  That’s not how a free country operates.”

A California law called the Reproductive “FACT” Act requires medical pregnancy resource centers to refer women for abortions and non-medical centers to advertise in up to 13 languages that they are not supervised by a medical professional.  Among other problems with the law, its requirements make advertising for the pregnancy centers cost-prohibitive.

“In what other case does a state force a non-licensed provider of goods and services to advertise precisely what it is trying to prevent?,” added Fr. Pavone.  “The only purpose of this California law is to shut down pregnancy resource centers that offer pregnant women alternatives to abortion.  California politicians may want to trample on the Constitution to protect their financial supporters in the abortion industry; I find it difficult to think that the Supreme Court would let them.”
