TITUSVILLE, FL -- With Baby Alfie Evans breathing on his own in England and his parents waiting to learn if they will be allowed to take their toddler to Italy, Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, is urging people around the world to spiritually surround the baby with prayer.

“Let us gather together by the side of Alfie and his family,” Father Pavone said in a Facebook Live video last night, just a few hours after Alfie’s ventilator was removed. The prayer vigil lasted about an hour; some 40,000 people have participated in it  so far and it has been shared nearly 1,000 times. Displaying a relic of Pope St. John Paul II, Fr. Pavone asked those joining him in prayer to ask for the intercession of the “Pope of Life.”

Italy has granted citizenship to Baby Alfie, a hospital in Rome has agreed to take him and Pope Francis, who met with Alfie’s father, Tom Evans, has Tweeted his support for bringing Alfie to the Vatican-run hospital.

“There’s a lot to pray about right now,” Father Pavone said. “God of light, come into this darkness.”

Father Pavone said during the prayer vigil that this time of solidarity of the world in prayer with Alfie’s family reminded him of the night he spent at Terri Schiavo’s bedside in 2005, during the final hours of her life, and the night in 2011 when Fr. Pavone traveled in a medical jet to take Baby Joseph from the hospital in Canada that refused to treat him, to a hospital in Saint Louis which did.

“Sometimes we cannot stop death, but we can always stop the silence! We must not only pray, but speak out when injustice is done against any human life,” Fr. Pavone declared.

Father Pavone also wrote a special prayer for the baby that asks God to “Take away the blindness of doctors and judges who pretend to be God, and try to impose their view that death could ever be in the best interests of a child.”

Noting that both Alfie and his dad are baptized Catholics, Father Frank led Facebook viewers in praying the rosary.

“No doctor, no hospital, no country,” he said, “can take away the value of a human life.”
