Priests for Life leader and Abortion leader continue friendship, meetings
 |
At the recent National Right to Life Convention (June 28-30 in
Crystal City, VA), I once again joined my friend Bill Baird, and his
wife Joni, for conversation over lunch. This has been an annual
tradition, interspersed with communication throughout the year as
well, in the context of a friendship that has been nurtured for over
a decade. Because we are leaders in opposing movements, our
friendship has gotten media attention over the years and more than a
few curious inquiries. But it is completely sincere and honest. We
learn from one another, not because we have any doubt about our
respective positions, but because we believe than any human being
can learn from another. We do not in any way apologize or minimize –
either privately or publicly – what we believe and fight for. But we
are convinced that everyone on both sides of the abortion issue
shares a common humanity. In fact, when you think of it, is that not
part of the pro-life message, that our common humanity – also shared
by the unborn – cries out for respect and protection.
Prior to the convention, Bill sent to me, and publicized,
a letter that I would like
to also share with you. It shows that he is entering a new phase in
his life, and it also shows his attitude toward the pro-life
movement. Also in this photo you see us conversing over lunch a few
weeks ago.
