Topic:
Tubal Ligation Performed Without Consent
Question: |
During my recent hospital stay my tubes were tied during my emergency c-section. I did not consent to the tubal ligation before hospital admission and I feel that they breached medical ethics in asking my spouse to sign a consent form that I would not have signed in the first place and that it was for a procedure that was not medically necessary to save my life at that time and also against my personal religious beliefs. Do you know any organizations I could contact that might give me legal help?

I am so sorry to hear about the result of your recent surgery. You must feel betrayed and broken by this on many different levels. Priests for Life recommends you check with the following organizations for legal guidance: Life Legal Defense Foundation, Alliance Defense Fund, Thomas More Society.
You can visit these organizations at: www.priestsforlife.org/pro-life-lawyers .
I know that you desperately need healing from this wound on your soul. Please seek the advice of a good priest in your area and I pray that you can somehow be a part of mending this strife in your marriage. I encourage you to ask your husband to seek forgiveness and talk to your priest as well. Tubal ligations can be reversed and this may be what you choose to pursue in order to help heal from this attack on your body, but the Church does not require you to do this. Please let me know if we can help in any other way, I pray that this trial will bring you closer to your Lord. Sincerely, Matthew Harrison, MD
