HIGH SCHOOL HONORABLE MENTION
What is Truth?
Katie Buckmaster, Henderson, Kentucky
Mother's stare tells him he's in trouble,
An unchecked lie from his mouth again tumbles;
Skeptically, the mother regards the boy.,
"Truth by lying is destroyed;
Tell the truth!" she wisely advises,
But what is truth?
High School comes and it's a blast,
Girls, parties, and skipping class;
Until his girlfriend's in a fix,
They plan to terminate this thing quick;
The sinful plan terrorize the soul that cries,
"Tell the truth!" But what is truth?
Their counselor directs them to a Family Clinic,
"These professionals will take care of us," the boy
mimics;
People on the street are counseling and praying,
"For this lie an awful price you are paying;
Don't kill your own child! To him and yourself be true!"
But what is truth?
As he opens the door, the young man recoils,
This clinic with the blood of innocents was soiled;
He couldn't suppress the fear and the horror,
That he felt for the child he could no longer ignore;
These "care givers" weren't just about to
"interrupt a pregnancy."
But kill a child with an eternal destiny.
No longer an accomplice in their crime,
He exposes these deceivers to his girlfriend in time;
"This is wrong," he says. "We mustn't believe
this lie,"
She agrees and their strained consciences inwardly sigh;
Strangely, the young father recalls a long forgotten verse,
I am ... truth."' (John 14:6)
