NEW YORK — To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the founding of Priests for Life and to highlight its core mission of empowering clergy to be passionate advocates for the unborn, Father Frank Pavone, National Director, has released today his newest book, Proclaiming the Message of Life: Weekly Reflections from the Lectionary (Servant Books, 2016)

The book guides clergy –and laity – through the pro-life themes found in the readings of every Sunday of all three liturgical years.

Proclaiming the Message of Life provides an overview of the Scriptural, doctrinal and liturgical bases for preaching the pro-life message, presents homily hints for Sundays and holy days, and articulates the pro-life dimensions of the priesthood itself.

“Defending the dignity of the human person is not a task added on to our ministry but rather one inseparable from it and flowing from its very heart,” Father Pavone writes in a chapter on “The Heart of the Priesthood.”

The preaching tips focus on abortion as the preeminent issue, for reasons that both this book and an entire body of Church documents identify and discuss.

Another section of the book also reviews dozens of common fears or hesitations clergy have regarding preaching on abortion.

The book has received the endorsement of several high-profile Catholic clergy, including Colorado Springs Bishop Michael Sheridan, EWTN’s Father Mitch Pacwa, S.J., and Father John Trigilio Jr., president of the Confraternity of Catholic Clergy.

To order the new book, go to www.ProclaimingTheMessageOfLife.com.

Priests for Life had its start in San Francisco when several priests wanted to form an association to help their brother priests. The new apostolate received recognition by the Archbishop of San Francisco on April 30, 1991. Fr. Frank Pavone became the first full-time director in 1993. The apostolate has now become a family of ministries including Rachel’s Vineyard, Silent No More, Stand True Youth Outreach, Civil Rights for the Unborn (led by Evangelist Alveda King, niece of Martin Luther King, Jr.), and much more. It is the largest ministry in the Catholic Church focused exclusively on ending abortion.

WASHINGTON, DC — The petitioners in Priests for Life vs. HHS, one of the Supreme Court cases consolidated into Zubik vs. Burwell, commented today on the supplemental briefs submitted to the Supreme Court yesterday. Both the petitioners and the government were responding to questions posed in a March 29 order of the Court.

Janet Morana, Executive Director of Priests for Life, said: “From the beginning of this case, I have made it clear that I will not sign any forms that authorize our insurance company to cover these objectionable services in the health insurance we offer our employees. This case is not about the actions of third-parties. What the insurance company or the government will do without any authorization or involvement from us is one thing; what they try to force us to do is quite another.”

Dr. Alveda King, niece of Martin Luther King, Jr. and full-time director of Civil Rights for the Unborn (the African-American outreach of Priests for Life), said, “Women’s reproductive issues are very complex. Forcing us to provide contraception will never resolve a woman’s deepest issues. There once was a woman with an issue of blood and Christ became her healer. May the church rise up and serve our women or else the government will continue to destroy our greatest blessings.”

Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, stated, “The Court has asked us the right question. They asked us to draw the line, as believers, between behavior that is acceptable and behavior that is unacceptable to our faith. We have done so. Now it remains for the Court to rule to protect our freedom to live that faith by being able to choose freely what kind of insurance coverage we offer to our employees.”

Priests for Life, the largest Catholic organization focused on ending abortion, was the first of the 37 petitioners in Zubik vs. Burwell to challenge the HHS mandate in court.

The petitioners’ brief is here. The government’s brief is here. The Court order requesting the briefs is here.

Priests for Life is conducting a nationwide prayer campaign at www.SupremeCourtVictory.com for a favorable outcome in this case. For more information about the case, see www.IStandWithPFL.com.

Fr. Frank Pavone Re-elected President of National Pro-life Religious Council

WASHINGTON, D.C. — At a meeting last week of its board of directors, the National Pro-life Religious Council (NPRC), by a unanimous vote, re-elected Fr. Frank Pavone President of this inter-denominational organization that seeks to end abortion and equip the Church to proclaim the Gospel of Life.

“Thank you for your ongoing trust; it is a privilege to serve the organization in this way,” Fr. Frank said to the board members. The other officers of the organization were also re-elected to serve another term, and they are Rev. Kirk van der Swaagh, Vice President; Rev. Dennis DiMauro, Secretary, and Mr. Ernie Ohlhoff, Treasurer.

Along with his role as National Director of Priests for Life, Fr. Frank’s leadership of the NPRC enables him to serve even more effectively the interdenominational needs of the pro-life movement. “As Pope Saint John Paul II wrote in Evangelium Vitae, “No single person or group has a monopoly on the defense and promotion of life. These are everyone’s task and responsibility” (EV 91). In that same paragraph, he explains,

‘Service of the Gospel of life is thus an immense and complex task. This service increasingly appears as a valuable and fruitful area for positive cooperation with our brothers and sisters of other Churches and ecclesial communities, in accordance with the practical ecumenism which the Second Vatican Council authoritatively encouraged. It also appears as a providential area for dialogue and joint efforts with the followers of other religions and with all people of good will.’

“The NPRC has provided a key role in bearing witness to the historic, Biblical, Christian teaching on the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death. This is a particularly urgent need, in light of the fact that some denominations have abandoned that teaching by asserting that some child-killing is morally justified, and the fact that some groups have even been formed to explicitly present abortion as an act consistent with Scripture and to have liturgies that ask God’s blessing upon that action. In reality, however, there is only one proper Christian response to our brothers and sisters still in the womb, and that is to welcome and protect them; there is, moreover, only one proper Christian response to their parents, and that is to take their hands and provide for them life-giving alternatives to abortion,” concluded Fr. Frank.

Fr. Frank was also re-elected unanimously by the Priests for Life board at its most recent meeting to continue his role as National Director. Priests for Life is the largest ministry in the Catholic Church focused on ending abortion.

Fr. Pavone: Clinton, Sanders out of step with Americans on abortion

NEW YORK — Even the Huffington Post expressed dismay that after seven debates, the Democratic candidates Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton had not been asked any questions about their extreme views on abortion. A Twitter campaign, #AskAboutAbortion was even started because of the glaring omission on an issue of such importance to so many Americans.

Last night, finally, Bret Baier broke the silence on the Fox News Town Hall with the Democratic candidates. He asked both candidates, “Can you name a single circumstance at any point in a pregnancy in which you would be OK with abortion being illegal?”

Sen. Sanders could not name a single circumstance. Touting the worn-out and contrary-to-fact slogan of abortion advocates, he said, “That is a decision to be made by the woman, her physician and her family.”

Secretary Clinton said, “I have been on record in favor of a late pregnancy regulation that would have exceptions for the life and health of the mother.”

But as those who follow the abortion issue closely know, “health of the mother” is the exception that swallows the rule, because under Supreme Court precedent, any circumstance can be construed as a “health” reason.

Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, commented, “Once again, the Democrats can’t point to an abortion that they wouldn’t permit. This does not simply reflect the views of these two candidates, but that of the official party platform. At the same time, it is out of touch with grassroots Americans, including Democrats, who are increasingly opposed to the out of control policy of abortion on demand that has held sway in America since Roe vs. Wade.”

Abolishing Abortion: A Must Read Book for Such a Time as This

Tuesday, August 18th, 2015

150818 blog image

The latest book by Fr. Frank Pavone, Abolishing Abortion: How You Can Play a Part in Ending the Greatest Evil of Our Day, is a much needed book in these turbulent days as we see the value of human life being attacked on many different fronts.

In ABOLISHING ABORTION, Rev. Frank Pavone delivers twenty “arrows” to pierce the chinks in the deadly armor of the abortion machine. It’s a how to approach packed with anecdotes and historical perspectives.

I have been working with Fr. Frank for ten years as Director of African American Outreach with Priests for Life. During this time we have fought many battles to save the unborn from death and for their right to life. We have also labored to help the mothers and families of the babies. For abortion makes victims not only of the babies, but society as a whole.

I first met Rev. Pavone at a Right to Life meeting over twenty years ago. I had been Pro-life since 1983, and as a post abortive African American woman, I welcomed the opportunity to join him in the greatest Civil Rights battle of our times.

Just as my uncle, Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., and my father, Rev. A.D. King, fanned the flames of the civil rights movement, so today Rev. Frank Pavone is doing the same for the movement to end abortion. Fr. Frank’s book ‘Abolishing Abortion’ is another step in that great task.”

Life today seems to have less value, at least in the eyes of many. Whether it’s Black lives, unborn lives, lives of the disabled, lives of the elderly, ALL life has been devalued. Yet what would you expect from societies that allow a mother to kill her own child and call it a personal ‘choice?’

Today death has spread from the abortion facilities to the deserts of Iraq, to the streets of our cities, to the classrooms of our schools, and to the prayer meetings of our churches.

The killing will not end until we begin to defend the most innocent of all, the unborn babies in the womb. When we say that their lives matter, then we can truly say, “All Lives Matter.” And yes, we can even put a hashtag in front of it if we like.

Abolishing Abortion is a call to action for everyone who values human life; which can change hearts and minds and ultimately the world.

Father Pavone’s Abolishing Abortion Hits Bookshelves Today

Pro-life manifesto calls upon the Church and State to protect unborn children.

NEW YORK — Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life and a long-time pro-life activist, has long said he’s not just fighting abortion, he’s working to end it.

His new book, Abolishing Abortion: How You Can Play a Part in Ending the Greatest Evil of Our Day (Thomas Nelson, HarperCollins Christian Publishing), released today, outlines a strategy to end abortion in the United States.

In the book, Father Pavone explores biblical, moral, historical, and legal reasons Christians belong in the public square and challenges both churches and individual Christians to full engagement.

Abolishing Abortion calls upon both the Church and the State to step up and fulfill their duties to protect the unborn child. It provides readers with legal facts, political strategies, and theological rationales for getting engaged and being effective.

Endorsed by a who’s who of political and pro-life leaders, Abolishing Abortion details how 1973’s Roe v. Wade ruling actually changed the kind of government we have in the United States and guides readers through practical steps they can take to restore the democracy the Founding Fathers had in mind.

Those who have endorsed the book include Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback, who said Abolishing Abortion is a “stirring call to both church and state to protect the unborn.”

Presidential hopefuls Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum have likewise endorsed the book.

Abolishing Abortion hits bookshelves at a time when Americans are being presented with a series of undercover videos recorded at Planned Parenthood facilities, revealing the horror of their activities. Father Pavone’s book actually outlines the strategy that leads to these undercover projects, explains their power, and outlines the practical follow-up action that needs to be taken.

Father Pavone said that through Abolishing Abortion, he has tried to express and spread the passion that he and so many others have for ending child killing.

“This book goes to the core of what we have to do to end abortion,” he said. “It openly and honestly discusses the failure of both the state and the church in this regard, and offers practical solutions, strategies and steps forward in which we can all take part.”

Fr. Pavone to Pray and Speak at Supreme Court on Tuesday

Priests for Life awaits response from Court re HHS Mandate

WASHINGTON, DC – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, will join other Americans concerned about the right to life and religious freedom at a rally in front of the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday morning, March 25, when the Court will hear oral arguments in regard to the HHS Mandate. Further Supreme Court action on this matter is expected on the 28th in regard to Priests for Life.

The rally for religious freedom will take place from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. ET.

Planned Parenthood is also expected to bring people to rally in favor of the mandate.

The oral arguments in the consolidated cases of Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Woods will begin inside the court at 10 a.m. and conclude at 11:30 a.m.

Priests for Life has been urging people to join a novena of prayer during these days for the reversal of the mandate. The prayers for each day can be found at www.PrayerCampaign.org.

“This is a moment of Biblical proportions,” Fr. Pavone explained. “Scripture, and all Christian history, are filled with moments of conflict between civil authority and people of faith. At every point, those people are called to obey God rather than man.

“We at Priests for Life also have a lawsuit against this mandate, and in fact were among the first to file one. We too have a petition to the Supreme Court to hear our case, and the Justices will consider whether they will do so this Friday, March 28,” Fr. Pavone commented. “The case being heard on Tuesday concerns the rights of for-profit businesses; in our case, the Court would be considering the rights of non-profit religious entities. Obviously, the Court eventually needs to address both.”

In its petition to the Supreme Court on behalf of Priests for Life, the American Freedom Law Center points out, “this challenge goes to the very core of Priests for Life’s reason for existing as an organization. Consequently, Petitioners are well situated—and perhaps best suited—to challenge the mandate and its application to non-exempt, nonprofit religious organizations.” The Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit has also consolidated the case brought by the Archdiocese of Washington and its related institutions together with that of Priests for Life.

Fr. Pavone concluded, “In the end, the matter is simple: We love our faith; we love our country, and we want to be able to do both at the same time.”

Fr. Pavone Invites Pro-lifers to Sign Open Letter to President Obama Following Outrageous Omissions in Prayer Breakfast Speech

Monday, February 17th, 2014

Washington, DC — Responding to President Obama’s speech at the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, Feb. 6, Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, has written an open letter to the President that he is asking all pro-life people to sign on to.

The letter also contains a link to the full text of the President’s speech.

“This speech raises troubling contradictions, and a glaring blind spot, about which we cannot be silent,” Fr. Pavone declares.

Among the troubling aspects of the speech, Fr. Pavone points out that the President, while upholding consistently a policy of abortion on demand, states, “the killing of the innocent is the ultimate betrayal of God’s will.”

And, while trying to force Americans to violate their faith through the HHS mandate, the President states in his speech, “Central to [human] dignity is freedom of religion — the right of every person to practice their faith how they choose.”

Fr. Pavone has promised those who sign on to the letter that he will deliver it personally to the proper people at the White House. Will it have an impact? Fr. Pavone explains, “We do not think that by writing the President a letter, he is suddenly going to have a Saint Paul conversion. That’s not what we’re doing here. But it is still essential to write to him publicly for the sake of helping the public to reject his errors, and to demand of him, as the letter says, an accounting to the American people as to why and how, in that speech, he would tolerate a blind spot so large as to swallow up the very principles that he spends the rest of the speech vigorously proclaiming.”

All are invited to sign the open letter today, which is President’s Day!

The letter can also be accessed at www.LetterToObama.org

Fr. Pavone to celebrate MLK legacy with King family in Atlanta

Friday, January 17th, 2014

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: January 17, 2014

On Monday, Jan. 21, Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, will join Dr. Alveda King and her family in Atlanta for observances of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Father Pavone has been honoring the legacy of the late civil rights leader with the King family for more than a decade.

“It’s been my honor to spend this time with the King family and to be part of the historic celebrations that annually mark the birth of America’s pre-eminent civil rights leader,” Father Pavone said.

He added that the proximity of the holiday with the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision serves as a good reminder that when we talk about the “unfinished business” of fulfilling the dream of Dr. King, first on the list is restoring the right to life to the children in the womb, and ending the violence of abortion.

Dr. Alveda King, the full-time director of African-American Outreach for Priests for Life, said that when Father Pavone joins her family onstage at the culmination of the main ceremony at Ebenezer Baptist Church, “We are reminded that with abortion, we still have much to overcome. We still need civil rights for the babies.”

Father Pavone will preach a sermon at 11 a.m. Sunday at Bible Believers Church, 3689 Campbellton Rd. SW in Atlanta. He also will be at the Salute to Greatness Dinner Saturday night at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta.

“As we celebrate all that Dr. King was able to accomplish, I want to invite everyone to read and sign on to the statement that some members of the King Family have signed called The Beloved Community and the Unborn. It expresses, above all, what we should be thinking and talking about during this upcoming week of pro-life and civil rights events,” Father Pavone said.

The statement can be found at www.priestsforlife.org/africanamerican/beloved-community-and-the-unborn.htm.

Renewed Priests for Life Pro-Life Training Announced

347-286-7277

Presentations include Archdiocese of Chicago, EWTN, and the Vatican

This week and next, Priests for Life is announcing new efforts in the pro-life education of the clergy and laity. Building on the work of the last two decades, Priests for Life will present renewed initiatives to train people how to live out their commitment to protecting human life. “The pro-life effort is not simply a cause, a movement, or a political position,” explained Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life. “All that has its place. But pro-life is, at its core, a spirituality. The Gospels and the teachings of the Church not only teach us why we are pro-life; they teach us how to live it. There are specific virtues we need, and these virtues shape pro-life activity and strategy.”

Priests for Life just produced new programs for EWTN which reflect this spirituality, and this week Fr. Frank will present it, at the invitation of the Vatican, to a conference of jurists sponsored by the Pontifical Council for the Family. Then, at the end of the week, Fr. Frank will again present this approach in Chicago.

The Archdiocese of Chicago’s Respect Life Office, with the blessing of His Eminence Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., has invited Fr. Frank to lead a special leadership retreat for Parish Respect Life Coordinators to help them spiritually and mentally prepare for Respect Life Month and another great year of pro-life parish ministry.

“Several years ago, I went to a pro-life retreat that was led by Fr. Frank, and since then, I have wanted to provide this type of experience to all of our Parish Respect Life Coordinators” said Margie Breen, Director of the Respect Life Office of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

“I first came to know of Fr. Frank Pavone and Priests for Life from Father’s appearances on several different EWTN shows. First, it was Father asking people to view the horrible abortion pictures on his Priests for Life website that got me involved in the pro-life movement. Second, I credit Father for my full time pro-life ministry. It was during one of his EWTN homilies that he asked people to leave their current full time work and find ways to work full time in the pro-life movement. I stepped out in faith, and God opened the doors to my current ministry as Respect Life Office Director. The road hasn’t been easy, but it never is when you are working to fight one of the worst injustices of our time. I am grateful to Father Frank and Priests for Life for their important ministry!,” Margie concluded.

Fr. Frank explained, “This retreat will be designed to impart the pro-life spirituality on which we have trained activists around the world for years. It is a spirituality based on the teaching, life and example of three pro-life icons whom I was privileged to know personally and who shaped profoundly my own vocation to pro-life activism: Blessed John Paul II, Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, and Cardinal John O’Connor, who ordained me to the priesthood and gave me permission to devote myself fulltime to the defense of the unborn.”

Fr. Frank added, “From its inception, Priests for Life has had a close and fruitful relationship with the Archdiocese of Chicago. When Cardinal O’Connor released me to be the first full-time director of the organization, Cardinal Bernardin of Chicago permitted Fr. Jim Heyd to be the Associate Director. Cardinal George later permitted Fr. Heyd to work with us full-time. On many occasions over the years, the Archdiocese and its parishes have welcomed Priests for Life. Now, with the exemplary work of Margie Breen, and under the inspiring leadership of Cardinal George, the Archdiocese continues to advance the pro-life cause, and I am honored to assist in that effort.”
