Prayer Rally set in Front of Court

Priests for Life will be in the US Supreme Court for oral arguments on Wednesday, March 23 in the case of Priests for Life vs. HHS. On that day, Priests for Life will hold a prayer rally in front of the steps of the Supreme Court, and invites all who are in favor of life and religious freedom to join them.

There will be prayers, speeches, and educational talks regarding what is happening in this case, and various church leaders, politicians, Presidential candidates, and pro-life leaders are being invited to take part in the rally.

Leading up to the oral arguments, and then leading up to the decision which is expected in June, Priests for Life invites all to take part in the prayer campaign against the HHS mandate, found at www.PrayerCampaign.org.

Six other similar cases have been consolidated by the high court with the Priests for Life case. Among the unique elements of the Priests for Life case is the fact that the entire mission and purpose of the organization is to end abortion, while the HHS mandate tries to force the plaintiffs into helping the government expand abortion. Moreover, in the Priests for Life case, there are three personal plaintiffs in addition to the organization itself: Fr. Frank Pavone, Janet Morana, and the niece of Martin Luther King Jr., Dr. Alveda King, who serves fulltime as Director of African-American Outreach for Priests for Life.

NEW YORK — “The case of Priests for Life vs. HHS is one of the seven cases that have been consolidated and accepted by the U.S. Supreme Court. We are grateful to Rep. Diane Black, Rep. Mike Kelly, and all the other members of Congress who have expressed strong support for our case and the other six cases. Various members of Congress joined us for the rally we held at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

“Priests for Life will organize another prayer rally in front of the U.S. Supreme Court on the day of the oral arguments there. We are also leading a prayer campaign sponsored by a coalition of 43 national pro-life and religious groups, praying for victory in the Supreme Court. The prayers can be found at www.PrayerCampaign.org.”

Priests for Life is represented in this case by the American Freedom Law Center, led by attorneys Robert Muise and David Yerushalmi. “Along with the other cases that have been consolidated with ours, it is particularly appropriate that Priests for Life has been fighting this mandate, since the very purpose of the organization is to oppose the very activities that the mandate supports, particularly abortion,” said Mr. Muise.

In the Priests for Life case, plaintiffs included, along with the organization, the following people in their individual capacity: Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life; Janet Morana, Executive Director of Priests for Life and Co-Founder of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, and Dr. Alveda King, Director of African-American Outreach for Priests for Life and niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The seven cases that were consolidated and are being heard by the Supreme Court are as follows:

14-1418 ZUBIK, DAVID A. ET AL. V. BURWELL, SEC. OF H&HS, ET AL.
14-1453 PRIESTS FOR LIFE, ET AL. V. DEPT. OF H&HS, ET AL.

Priests for Life files opening brief with Supreme Court in HHS mandate challenge

Thursday, January 7th, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Priests for Life, along with other non-profit religious organizations challenging the Obamacare HHS mandate, has filed its opening brief with the Supreme Court. The filing sets the stage for oral arguments that will be held this spring in one of the most closely watched cases of the year.

“Priests for Life has been fighting the Obama administration’s attempted suppression of religious beliefs for four years,” said Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life and an individual plaintiff in the case. “We are excited the Supreme Court accepted our case. This brief marks an important step in determining, hopefully once and for all, that the government may not target charitable religious groups with heavy handed, politically motivated attacks.”

Priests for Life filed one of the first lawsuits against the Obama administration’s mandate that would require religious organizations to take part in practices that flagrantly violate their own teaching. The case, which has been consolidated with six others from across the country, is expected to be decided by the Supreme Court by the end of its term this June.

“Our brief makes clear that the Obama administration has no valid reason to require religious non-profit groups to comply with this regulation when it has already granted exemptions that allow tens of millions of other Americans to avoid it,” added Fr. Pavone. “Frankly, the President and his bureaucrats have far easier ways of achieving their stated goals than singling out Christians for coercion. As I’ve said before and will continue to declare, Priests for Life will not be complicit in evil, no matter who is mandating it.”

Priests for Life is leading a prayer campaign for victory in the Supreme Court and asks all believers to join this effort. Go to www.prayercampaign.org to find the prayer.

Medical Groups Stand with Priests for Life in Supreme Court Case against Obama’s HHS Mandate

Wednesday, November 18th, 2015

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: November 18, 2015

347-286-7277

WASHINGTON, DC — Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, issued the following statement this morning in advance of the press conference at 11 a.m. at the National Press Club in which he, Janet Morana, Dr. Alveda King (all of Priests for Life) and David Yerushalmi (American Freedom Law Center, representing Priests for Life) will address their challenge to the HHS mandate in the case recently accepted by the Supreme Court:

“As we hold our press conference this morning, I want to point out that seven national organizations comprised of physicians, bioethicists, and other health-care professionals, have filed a friend of the court brief that was accepted by the U.S. Supreme Court when it granted cert to our case a week and a half ago. The organizations are as follows:

ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN PHYSICIANS & SURGEONS
AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF PRO-LIFE OBSTETRICIANS & GYNECOLOGISTS
CHRISTIAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
THE NATIONAL CATHOLIC BIOETHICS CENTER
ALABAMA PHYSICIANS FOR LIFE
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF PRO LIFE NURSES
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CATHOLIC NURSES

“The brief these organizations have filed provides the medical evidence that some of the ‘services’ that we object to covering in our insurance plan do in fact act in such a way as to end a new human life after it has begun. Moreover, as health-care professionals who regularly have to defend their own rights of conscience, these organizations stand with us to oppose any government coercion we face to violate our own conscience.

“We thank these groups for standing with us, and look forward to victory in this case.”

Statement by Alveda C. King Regarding the Priests for Life HHS Mandate Lawsuit Currently Before the United States Supreme Court

Wednesday, November 18th, 2015

PriestsForLife

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: November 18, 2016

Washington, DC – As Director of African American Outreach for Priests for Life, and a post abortive mother who has experienced the pain and harm of contraceptive agents such as shots, pills and devices, I join several women employees of Priests for Life in standing against any implied or otherwise open participation with any aspect of the HHS Mandate. I stand with Priests for Life which includes Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life; Janet Morana, Executive Director of Priests for Life; and myself.

The HHS Mandate infringes upon my rights as a woman, my religious freedom, my civil rights, and my health and well being.

Understanding that the U. S. Supreme Court speaks and rules from a position of common law — human law, and operating under a measure of authority to govern, in America theirs is the highest rule of law that humans can make. Yet the rule of the USSC is not the final word.

In the end, natural law, God’s law will always trump common law. Do not fear or be confused or deceived. Remain prayerful. Keep looking up. God will have the final word in this matter.

Therefore, I must encourage listeners in this manner: “Don’t be misled — you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant.”(Galatians 6:7 NLT)

“Let not your heart faint, and be not fearful at the report heard in the land, when a report comes in one year and afterward a report in another year, and violence is in the land, and ruler is against ruler.” – Jeremiah 51:46 ESV

As to the decisions before us regarding the HHS Mandate, in contrast to God’s law, the civil laws and common laws of nations are not written on anyone’s conscience or mind.

They are not written in the physical creation. Nor are they appended to the Bible. The civil laws of nations are only written in their own law books.

Consequently, the validity and force of such laws are based solely on national authority. There is no other supporting evidence or “witness” to testify for the validity of specific civil laws.

Consequently, in order for the civil laws of any nation to be authoritative, they must at least be supported by the testimony of another source and that they are consistent with God’s delegation of authority to civil governments.

This is more thoroughly explained in Romans 13:

“Let every soul be in subjection to the higher powers: for there is no power but of God; and the powers that be are ordained of God. Therefore he that resisteth the power, withstandeth the ordinance of God: and they that withstand shall receive to themselves judgment. For rulers are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. And wouldest thou have no fear of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise from the same:

Wherefore ye must needs be in subjection, not only because of the wrath, but also for conscience’ sake.

Render to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor. Owe no man anything, save to love one another: for he that loveth his neighbor hath fulfilled the law. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not murder, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not covet, and if there be any other commandment, it is summed up in this word, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbor: love therefore is the fulfilment of the law.”

Romans 13:1-3, 5, 7-10 ASV

In order for the laws of a nation to be valid, they must at the very least harmonize with, and not contradict, the law of God. We know the law of God by looking to its expressions. If the laws of a nation conflict with one of the expressions of the law of God, then something is amiss. Or, perhaps we do not understand one or the other clearly.

Unfortunately, for women, the HHS Mandate does not conform to this formula which is why I stand with Priests for Life in the complaint against the HHS Mandate.

Niece of Martin Luther King, Jr. and others to Explain Supreme Court Challenge to HHS Mandate

Washington, DC — Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, issued the following statement this morning:

“Tomorrow morning at 11am at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, I will hold a press conference together with others on our Priests for Life team to explain what is at issue in our challenge to the HHS Mandate. The US Supreme Court has accepted the case of Priests for Life vs. HHS, along with six other similar cases.

“Along with Priests for Life as an organization, our case names as individual plaintiffs Dr. Alveda King (our Director of African-American Outreach), Janet Morana (our Executive Director) and me. We will all be there, along with our attorney David Yerushalmi, who, with Robert Muise, represent us in this case through the American Freedom Law Center.

“At the press conference, we will explain in clear terms what is at issue in this case. We want the public to understand why we refuse to sign a simple form which, after all, says that we want to opt-out of providing insurance coverage for morally objectionable services.

“And we will also draw a line in the sand. We have said already that we will not obey the mandate, even if the Court upholds it. At this press conference, we will issue a rallying cry for others to join with us, and will remind the public of how essential this case is to the religious freedom of all Americans.”

“My Uncle, Martin Luther King, Jr. Would Be Proud of our Supreme Court Case” Dr. Alveda King Comments on Priests for Life Challenge to #HHSMandate

NEW YORK — Dr. Alveda King, niece of Martin Luther King, Jr. and full-time Director of African-American Outreach for Priests for Life, commented today on Priests for Life vs. HHS, a case that is one of seven that have just been accepted by the Supreme Court for review in the current term.

“I know that my father, Rev. A.D. King, and my Uncle, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. would be proud to see my name on a lawsuit that seeks to protect freedom of religion,” Dr. King said. “I am taking this action on behalf of my daughters and granddaughters, all the young women I work with, and every American who refuses to be told how to practice their faith.”

Priests for Life was the fourth group to file a federal lawsuit against the HHS mandate, back in February 2012. The organization is represented by the American Freedom Law Center, and its lead attorneys Robert Muise and David Yerushalmi.

Also represented in the case, along with the Priests for Life organization itself, are Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director, and Janet Morana, Executive Director.

“I could not in good conscience provide access for my employees to the harmful products the mandate would require us to cover,” Mrs. Morana said. “My book, Recall Abortion, documents the harm so many have experienced.

“Moreover, the accommodation the Obama administration has come up with is no accommodation at all. I am opposing the mandate as an American who favors religious freedom, as a pro-life advocate whose organization exists precisely to protect human life, not take or harm it, and as a Catholic whose faith is unequivocal on these points.”

Priests for Life will host a press conference at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. For more information on the lawsuit, see www.IStandWithPFL.com.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Priests for Life will host a press conference at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, in the Bloomberg Room of the National Press Club to discuss the organization’s case against the HHS mandate, one of seven that will be reviewed by the U.S. Supreme Court in its current term.

Father Frank Pavone, National Director; Janet Morana, Executive Director, and Dr. Alveda King, Director of African-American Outreach, will speak about the case, Priests for Life vs. Dept. of HHS, in which they are named plaintiffs. David Yerushalmi of the America Freedom Law Center, the firm representing Priests for Life, will also attend to comment on the legal issues involved.

“This case has enormous ramifications not only for the organizations in the consolidated case, but also for every faith-based ministry that has been targeted by this unjust mandate,” Father Pavone said. “Many of our friends and colleagues have their own cases against this mandate, and these cases are still in the lower courts. Among these are EWTN. The Supreme Court’s eventual decision will either affirm or cast aside the freedom of religion guaranteed by the United States Constitution and by federal law. Every American has a stake in this case.”

The press conference will summarize in laymen’s terms the objections that the religious groups have against the mandate. The press conference will also present the actions that Priests for Life is mobilizing Churches to take, including a nationwide prayer campaign, and other steps.

The National Press Club is at 529 14th St. NW, Washington, D.C. For more information about the case, go to www.IStandWithPFL.com To arrange interviews or for questions about the press conference, call Leslie Palma at 347-286-7277 or email her at leslie@priestsforlife.org

Priests for Life Announces Prayer Campaign for Victory in Supreme Court

Churches and families asked to pray that HHS mandate is reversed

WASHINGTON, DC — Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, announced today a special prayer campaign for the Supreme Court to reverse the HHS mandate.

“The U.S. Supreme Court has accepted the case of Priests for Life against the HHS mandate that tries to force us to cover abortion in our health insurance plans. Along with six other cases that have been consolidated with ours, the Court will consider whether the ‘accommodation’ that the Obama administration offers to groups like Priests for Life is a substantial burden to our religious freedom, and whether the government can achieve its objectives through less restrictive means,” Fr. Frank explained.

“Over the next six months or so, we ask all believers to join with us and the other plaintiffs in praying for victory in the Court. At our prayer website, PrayerCampaign.org, you will find a link to special prayers that we have written (http://www.priestsforlife.org/novenas/novena.aspx?id=8) for this intention.

“Victory for us and the other six cases means victory for every believer. It is not the government that decides what does or does not contradict our faith and our conscience. It is the believer, in union with his or her Church, who determines that. This is the essence of religious freedom,” Fr. Frank concluded.
