Help us keep the pressure on U.K. officials

March 6, 2018

We received bad news today from the British Court of Appeals. The court has dismissed a petition by the parents of Baby Alfie Evans that would have prevented a Liverpool hospital from disconnecting the ventilator that is helping him breathe.

Baby Alfie still needs our help!

That doesn’t mean we should give up. The boy’s parents, Tom Evans and Katie James, are not asking for a miracle. They just want their son prepared for travel so they can take him out of the country and to a hospital where doctors are more concerned with prolonging life, rather than ending life.

Baby Alfie’s parents have asked my help – and I am asking yours!

Baby Alfie Evans is 21 months old and a patient in Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. He was born healthy but at seven months, but a chest infection started causing seizures and Alfie was placed on life support at Alder Hey in December 2016.  His parents were told he wouldn’t survive.

Doctors don’t know what is causing his condition, but there is speculation that Alfie has Mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome, the rare disorder that afflicted Baby Charlie Gard.

In December 2017, his parents began to make arrangements to have him flown to the Bambino Gesu hospital in Rome where he would receive a tracheotomy and a feeding tube while doctors tried to determine what was wrong with him.  The parents have relied on donations made through a crowd-funding website to finance the effort. A hospital in Germany also is willing to take the baby.

But hospital officials refused to allow the transfer!

As I told Baby Alfie’s Dad, we’re not just going to wait for the courts.

We are taking this to the court of public opinion!

And that is where we need your voice! Please keep reading and we’ll tell you what we need you to do.

I was at the side of Baby Joseph Maraachli in Canada back in 2011, when the hospital there refused to allow his parents to bring him to another facility for a routine tracheotomy.

But we pressured that hospital, and succeeded in getting him transferred to get the care he needed.

Many of you helped us do that – and now we need your help again!

Please click here to send an email to lawmakers, a pro-life organization in Britain and the Care Quality Commission, an independent regulator of British health care. Tell them in the strongest terms that what the hospital and courts are planning for Baby Alfie are unacceptable. Tell them no one has the right to play God or to decide for the parents what is in the best interest of their child.

Please act today, and please pass along this email to as many others you know who may be interested.

And thank you for being part of the Priests for Life Family!
