Baby Alfie held hostage by British hospital

March 30, 2018

Dear Friends,

As we observe Good Friday, we find ourselves standing at the cross along with the parents of Baby Alfie Evans in Great Britain.

We have just heard from his parents that the hospital that wants to end his life will not even allow his extended family or friends to hold him until they agree to have a meeting about turning off the ventilator that is keeping him alive. I am urging the parents to stand firm and they have asked me to turn to you for help!

We need to put pressure on the hospital!

The boy’s parents, Tom Evans and Katie James, are not asking for a miracle. They just want their son prepared for travel so they can take him out of the country and to a hospital where doctors are more concerned with prolonging life, rather than ending life. A hospital in Rome has agreed to take him,

Baby Alfie’s parents have asked my help – and I am asking yours!

Baby Alfie Evans is 22 months old and a patient in Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. He was born healthy but at seven months, a chest infection started causing seizures and Alfie was placed on life support at Alder Hey in December 2016.  His parents were told he wouldn’t survive, even though doctors don’t know what’s causing his condition.

In December 2017, his parents began to make arrangements to have him flown to the Bambino Gesu hospital in Rome where he would receive a tracheotomy and a feeding tube while doctors tried to determine what was wrong with him.  The parents have relied on donations made through a crowd-funding website to finance the effort. A hospital in Germany also is willing to take the baby.

Hospital officials refuse to allow the transfer, and a succession of British courts agreed with the hospital. On Thursday, a three-judge panel of the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Tom Evans and Kate James’ appeal to take their son abroad for medical care was “inadmissible,” and that the child’s rights under the European Convention on Human Rights were not being violated.

And that is where we need your voice! Please keep reading and we’ll tell you what we need you to do.

I was at the side of Baby Joseph Maraachli in Canada back in 2011, when the hospital there refused to allow his parents to bring him to another facility for a routine tracheotomy.

But we pressured that hospital, and succeeded in getting him transferred to get the care he needed.

Many of you helped us do that – and now we need your help again!

Please click here to send an email to hospital officials. Tell them no one has the right to decide for the parents what is in the best interest of their child.

And when you do so, please also take a look at the video links I will provide to you that show how responsive Baby Alfie is!

Please act today, and please pass along this email to as many others you know who may be interested.

And thank you for being part of the Priests for Life Family!

Sincerely,

Fr. Frank Pavone
