Call Your Senators and Ask Them To Confirm
Judges and Executive Appointees Now!
November 19, 2018
We have now entered that strange political limbo known as the lame-duck season in the U.S. House and Senate. Legislators who did not run for re-election and those who lost their seats on Nov. 6 still represent their constituents, but chaos tends to reign in the House and Senate office buildings as some move out, others move in, and we’re told it even can be hard to find a phone to make a call.
But the Republican Majority can still do a lot in these six weeks to legislate, and, of course,
The Senate can confirm judges and other Presidential appointees!
I recently had an all-day meeting in Washington with other leaders and we agreed that we should
Urge the Senate to work around the clock to confirm these fine men and women that the President has appointed.
About 70 excellent federal judges already have been nominated by President Trump and are awaiting confirmation in the full Senate. A simple majority is all that’s needed to get these judges seated and hearing cases.
The courts need these judges! Due to retirements, there are more vacancies now in the federal courts than when President Trump took office.
The president has a great track record of confirmations to the federal courts – 84 of them now, including the two he has placed on the Supreme Court But in addition to facing additional vacancies because of retirements,
The Democrats in the Senate have been obstructing and delaying.
They use every procedural trick in the book… For instance, they insist on two votes instead of one. The first vote decides whether debate on a nominee will end and a vote scheduled. This is called a cloture vote, and after it, senators will have another 30 hours to continue discussing each nominee! They also demand that these votes be done by a roll-call vote, which takes much more time than a voice vote. And they use these tactics even when the nominee is not controversial! Something that can be done in a matter of hours can instead take a week!
The Democrat theme song is “Delay. Delay. Delay.”
In addition to the judicial nominees, there are more than 100 other nominations – to executive positions in the Trump administration – that still must be confirmed. Well-qualified people have been chosen, but a lot of good work in many departments of the Executive branch cannot get done because the positions are simply vacant!
Many of these positions have been vacant for almost two years since President Trump was sworn in!
The Democrats just don’t want to let the courts be transformed or let President Trump’s administration get its work done.
These nominations are not subject to filibuster. They can all get passed with the Republican majority!
Finally, the reason we want the Senate to act now is that those who are not confirmed by the time this 115th Congress ends must have their names sent back to the White House, and they have to be re-proposed to the new Congress. Some of these excellent people will not come back - after all, they cannot put their lives on hold forever just waiting for confirmation.
So I am asking you to call your senators – whether they will be returning in January or not. Thank them for their leadership and them that the work of the 115th Congress is not finished until all of the president’s nominees have been confirmed.
