Keep up the pressure on House Democrats and Support Republicans working to get a vote on Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act!
March 12, 2019
Every day that Congress has been in session since Feb. 6, a Republican member of the House of Representatives has asked for immediate consideration of H.R. 962, the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.
The Democratic leadership continues to deny these requests.
More than 15 members have made this simple request: “I ask unanimous consent that the Committee on the Judiciary be discharged from further consideration of H.R. 962, the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act and ask for its immediate consideration in the House.”
After each request, the Democratic speaker for the session reads a script saying why the bill will not be considered. If the Republican adds further comment – as Rep. Gary Palmer of Alabama did, noting that the bill would “prevent the killing of a living child” – the speaker admonishes him or her by noting they have not been recognized for debate.
The media is of course ignoring this effort.
The videos of these exchanges are very instructive, giving viewers a glimpse into the parliamentary rules that govern Congress and, where this bill is concerned, give Democrats a perfect excuse not to even consider the merits of a bill that would provide life-saving medical care to a newborn baby.
The Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act does not restrict abortion in any way. It simply recognizes that
when a child has been born, he or she deserves the same legal and compassionate protections as every other American.
As Rep. Scalise said in a floor speech last month:
“To many, this issue transcends abortion. This isn’t related to abortion anymore if a baby comes out of the womb and is alive. The fact that in only 26 states there are protections that that baby can’t be killed, that means that in nearly half the states in this country, that baby can still be killed legally. I still don’t completely grasp how that’s legal in America.”
Republicans will keep up this effort for 30 legislative days and then will file a discharge petition that would force a vote in the House if it is signed by 218 members. Democrats will either have to sign the petition or go on record opposing a bill that is only about saving babies born alive.
The Republican-controlled Senate, as you know, was unable to bring its version of the bill to a vote last month because the Democrats blocked it.
This is outrageous,
and I am asking you to do three things.
- Continue to watch the videos from the House;
- Share the videos with everyone you know;
- Contact your House member, Republican or Democrat. Tell the Republicans you support their efforts. Tell the Democrats you expect to see their name on the discharge petition that will allow this bill to be brought to the House floor.

And please forward this email to everyone you know who may be interested in helping!
