Democrats in House Again Try to Erase All Regulations on Abortion
February 19, 2020
The pro-abortion Democrats in the US House are at it again.
This month, a subcommittee of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce held a hearing on H.R. 2975, the Women’s Health Protection Act, which says that abortion “is essential to women’s health and central to women’s ability to participate equally in the economic and social life of the United States.”
Make no mistake: This misbegotten bill, and a similar one in the Senate, have no chance at becoming law. Even if the abortion ideologues in the House get it passed there, it will not pass in the Republican-controlled Senate. And pro-life President Trump would never sign such a radical piece of legislation into law.
As Ranking Committee Member Rep. Greg Walden (R-Oregon) said during the hearing, H.R. 2975 is "yet another deceptively titled partisan bill that has no chance of becoming law or being considered by the Senate."
Walden continued: "Even the original Roe v. Wade ruling never envisioned the extreme position reflected in this bill. By overturning nearly all federal and state limitations on abortion, the deceptively named Women's Health Protection Act would require the provisions of abortion on demand, at any stage of pregnancy, regardless of any compelling interest in the welfare of the patient, the protection of human life, or the conscience of the health practitioner."
Even though this bill will never make it past this Congress or this president, it’s important for us to oppose – and expose -- what the Democrats are up to, especially in light of the November elections, when every House seat is up for grabs.
Here’s just a small sample of some of the dangerous rhetoric spewed during the hearing by Democrats and the witnesses who spoke in favor of the bill.
Rep. Jan Schakowsky from Illinois said legalizing abortion meant “the end of women dying from abortion.”
Rep. Joe Kennedy from Massachusetts said laws surrounding abortion “put women, pregnant people and families in harm’s way,” and noted that these laws often are not applied to other medical procedures. What he failed to note, of course, was that no other medical procedure results in the intentional death of a human being.
Dr. Yashica Robinson, an Alabama abortionist once cited for health violations that included failure to sterilize the exam table between abortions, talked about how she was forced to give birth after waiting too long to abort. Imagine hearing your mother say that on the floor of Congress!
The good news is, the hearing wasn’t one-sided. Republican House members spoke up in favor of the unborn and against this onerous bill. Teresa Stanton Collett, a pro-life lawyer and law professor, spoke very knowledgably about the dismal state of women’s health care in the U.S., where 54 percent of all counties have no hospitals that provide obstetrical care, and the devastating consequences that would result if the Women’s Health Protection Act were to pass.
And Georgette Forney, who co-founded the Silent No More Awareness Campaign with Priests for Life Executive Director Janet Morana, did something that might have been a first: She read the names of some of the women killed in recent years by abortion.
“There are the women who can’t be Silent No More, because they were forever silenced by deadly complications from abortion,” she said, going on to read the names and circumstances of Keisha Atkins, Jennifer Morbelli, Tonya Reaves and Cree Erwin-Sheppard, all killed by abortion.
Naturally there was no comment from any abortion supporters, but it was a powerful moment nonetheless.
But make no mistake – a radical bill like this opens the floodgates of unlimited abortion, and once again reveals that this is exactly what the Democrat agenda for our country is.
What I am asking you to do is to call your member of the House of Representatives – Republican or Democrat - to tell them you oppose this bill and that if it comes up for a vote, you expect them to vote against it. Every seat in the House will be on the ballot in the November elections, so let them know their vote on this bill will influence your vote.
When you click the link below, you’ll be letting me know you will take part in this outreach effort, and I will provide information on how to proceed.
Thank you and God bless you!
