Urge WV Senator Joe Manchin’s continued support for the filibuster
March 14, 2021
The legislative filibuster in the US Senate was fine by the Democrats as long as the Republicans were in control and there was nothing the minority party could do to change it.
In fact, in 2017, 31 Senate Democrats signed a letter urging the Republicans to leave the filibuster rules intact.
How times have changed.
A filibuster is a tool that can be used by the minority party to extend debate on a bill indefinitely so that it does not come to a vote. In order to end debate (a move called “cloture”), a vote needs to be taken, which requires not just a majority, but 60 votes.
Once that happens, then a vote on the bill itself can be taken.
So this is a mechanism that can stop the more extreme kinds of bills by requiring that, in order for them to advance, there be more substantial support for them in the Senate and, by extension, in the general public.
This year, as you know, the Senate is split 50-50, and even with Vice President Kamala Harris’ tie-breaking vote, radical Democrat bills (will few exceptions) would never pass.
So now some Senate Democrats want to get rid of it!
For starters, in the power-sharing agreement that Senators Schumer and McConnell worked out at the start of this year, Schumer refused to take off the table the elimination of the filibuster.
"…for the sake of America doing big things again,” New Jersey Democrat Sen. Cory Booker said in an interview, “the filibuster has to be reformed."
What he meant was that there’s 50 Republicans (not to mention half the country) standing in the way of the Democrats’ extremist agenda on abortion, immigration, climate change and host of other issues.
Thankfully, it is by no means certain that all the Senate Democrats share these views.
In fact, your own senator has expressed his support of the filibuster!
Senator Joe Manchin – who often votes with Republicans on pro-life legislation – said this in an interview on March 9:
"There's no way that I would vote to prevent the minority from having input into the process in the Senate. That means protecting the filibuster. It must be a process to get to that 60-vote threshold."
We need to support Senator Manchin in this important conviction, and that’s where you come in.
I am asking you to call his office and tell him you appreciate his support of the filibuster and encourage him to stand firm.
Without the filibuster, every awful plan the Democrats concoct could become law.
