Urge House members to insist on a vote on the
No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act
June 28, 2021
Republicans in the House are standing up for American taxpayers and working to ensure that hard-earned tax dollars are not funding abortion by continuing to insist that H.R. 18, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, is brought to the floor for a vote.
The act would protect the Hyde Amendment, which since 1976 has protected tax dollars from being used to pay for most abortions. Its passage is particularly important now as the House begins work on a proposed budget for fiscal year 2022 that does not include Hyde protections.
Last week, Republican and pro-life leaders including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, House Whip Steve Scalise, House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, and Reps. Chris Smith – who sponsored the bill - Andy Harris, Kat Cammack and Michelle Fischbach made unanimous consent requests, asking Speaker Nancy Pelosi (or her proxy) to allow a vote on the bill. After each request, the Democrat-in-charge reads a speech denying the request.
But Republicans plan to keep the pressure on. Every day the House is in session from now until the August recess, Republicans will ask for a vote on this bill. Hyde used to enjoy the support of influential members of Congress, including Joe Biden when he was a senator. But now the Democrats’ abortion extremism excludes the wishes of a majority of Americans who do not want to pay for abortion.
In the House, 183 representatives have co-sponsored the legislation and many of them are planning in current days to stand up and ask for the bill to be released from the committees where it has been languishing since Rep. Smith introduced it on Feb. 5.
It’s important for all pro-life Americans to reach out to our House members, to thank those who are supporting the bill and will speak in favor of it, and to urge those who think they can ignore it to think again. The 2022 election cycle is already under way and as usual, every House seat is up for grabs.
When you click here, you will find out how to contact your House member and what to say when you do.
Please act today, and please pass along this email to as many others you know who may be interested.
