Ensure that every pro-lifer in Kansas votes YES on Value Them Both Amendment

May 31, 2022

Dear Friends,

Voters in Kansas will be choosing between life and death when they go to the polls on Tuesday, August 2nd.

On the ballot is a proposed constitutional amendment called Value Them Both that would make it clear there is no inherent right to abortion built into the state constitution.

Of course, the idea that the Kansas State Constitution contains a right to kill a baby is both absurd and offensive. And if those who say it does really believe their own rhetoric, how do they explain that it was found only now??

In a situation reminiscent of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision, the Kansas Supreme Court decided in 2019 that the state charter did indeed include a right to abortion, and thus squelched a bill aiming to protect babies from the brutality of a dismemberment abortion.

(I was with then-Governor Sam Brownback when he signed that bill into law in 2015.)

The court ruling tied legislators’ hands, making them unable to pass laws that would pose an “undue burden” to mothers seeking to abort their babies. Dismemberment abortion is the most common second-trimester technique. Abortion is legal in Kansas through 22 weeks.

The Value Them Both Amendment would add the following language to the bill of rights in the state constitution:

“Because Kansans value both women and children, the constitution of the state of Kansas does not require government funding of abortion and does not create or secure a right to abortion. To the extent permitted by the constitution of the United States, the people, through their elected state representatives and state senators, may pass laws regarding abortion, including, but not limited to, laws that account for circumstances of pregnancy resulting from rape or incest, or circumstances of necessity to save the life of the mother.”

By the time Kansans go to the polls in August, they will know whether the U.S. Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, as expected. If that happens, state legislators would be free to enact bills like Governor Brownback signed, and even like the one just signed into law in Oklahoma that protects babies from abortion from conception on.

If the amendment fails to pass, legislators will not be able to pass substantive protections for Kansas babies in the womb, and the right to abortion “discovered” by the Kansas Supreme Court in 2019 will remain. The father-and-daughter team of abortionists that challenged the dismemberment bill, and other abortionists in the state, will continue to legally tear babies apart limb from limb.

Any registered voter in the state – whether or not they are members of a political party - can vote yes or no for the amendment.

The deadline to register to vote is July 13, so I am asking Kansas residents who are not registered to do so right away. I’m also asking Kansans to spread the word about this amendment. I hope everyone else reading this alert will tell everyone they know in Kansas about this very important vote. If you use social media, please spread the word about this amendment on all your platforms.

Ensuring passage of this amendment really is a matter of life and death.

When you click here, you will be able to let me know that you are with me in this fight, and for Kansans who want to register to vote, or check their registration, there will be a link to important information on how to do that. You also will find a link to a special page that will detail other ways you can help.

Please act today, and please pass along this email to as many others you know who may be interested.
