Let your Governor and Lawmakers know you support Electoral College changes
April 23, 2024
Dear Friends,
One of the most important aspects of our Constitution is the Electoral College, by which we elect a President and Vice President every four years.
And as you know, the method by which Nebraska (and also Maine) allocate their electoral votes is different from the other 48 states.
But an effort is underway to bring Nebraska in line with the majority of the country, and that’s why I’m writing to you today. I need your help and that of all Nebraska residents.
Electoral votes are winner-take-all in the 48 states, meaning the candidate who wins the popular vote receives all of that state's votes. But Nebraska gives two electoral votes to the state popular vote winner, and one electoral vote to the popular vote winner in each congressional district.
There are three congressional districts in Nebraska, one of which is competitive in a direction contrary to the rest of the state.
In 2008, Barack Obama won Nebraska's 2nd District - Omaha and its suburbs - gaining a Democratic electoral vote in the state for the first time since 1964.
In 2020, Joe Biden won an electoral vote in Nebraska after winning the popular vote in the 2nd District in the otherwise firmly red state.
Now, in 2024, we simply have to do everything possible to save our country… And a simple change in Nebraska to allow all its electoral votes to be determined by a majority of Nebraskans can help us avoid another four years of disastrous Democrat policies.
What I’m about to explain, in other words, is not just for the sake of Nebraska, but affects all America.
Governor Jim Pillen has called on the state legislature to pass a bill that would change the way Nebraska allocates its votes in time for the November election. I don’t have to tell you how important this election is, and how every vote – especially those from the Electoral College – counts.
So far, attempts to change Nebraska’s system have not garnered enough votes, and the legislative session wrapped up on April 18. However, the Governor may call a special legislative session in order to still get this done.
That’s where you come in. I need you to call the governor’s office and the office of your state legislators and tell them you support letting the majority of Nebraska voters allocate all the state’s electoral votes.
Please do this today because time is of the essence, and please ask your family members, friends and neighbors to help in this effort.
May I count on you to do that?
