Urge Notre Dame to rescind Biden’s Laetare Medal
Dear Friends,
Joe Biden and his re-election team are in a full-blown “abortion-rights” frenzy, doing “tours” to promote it, visiting the killing centers, calling for pro-abortion legislation, and even throwing pro-life activists in jail.
This is not a man who deserves any “Catholic” honors.
In 2016, then-Vice President Joe Biden delivered the commencement address at Notre Dame University. During the ceremony, he was honored with the university’s Laetare Medal, awarded annually to a Catholic “whose genius has ennobled the arts and sciences, illustrated the ideals of the Church and enriched the heritage of humanity.”
At the time, Biden’s boss was the most pro-abortion president ever to serve the United States. But Biden has surpassed even Barack Obama in his quest to prevent the unborn from making it out of the womb alive.
It’s time to take the Laetare Medal back.
The Sycamore Trust, an independent organization of alumni and friends of Notre Dame who fight for the university’s Catholic identity, is spearheading an effort to have the university rescind the award. I’m asking you to help in this effort.
Established at Notre Dame in 1883, the Laetare Medal was conceived as an American counterpart of the Golden Rose, a papal honor from about the 11th century. Previous recipients include Laetare Medal are Civil War Gen. William Rosecrans, operatic tenor John McCormack, President John F. Kennedy, Catholic Worker foundress Dorothy Day, novelist Walker Percy, Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, labor activist Monsignor George G. Higgins, jazz composer Dave Brubeck and actor Martin Sheen.
If Notre Dame were to rescind Biden’s medal, it wouldn’t be the first time a recipient was stripped of an honor bestowed by Notre Dame.
- Cardinal Theodore McCarrick was awarded an awarded an honorary degree by the Indiana university in 2008. The honor was rescinded in 2019 after being found guilty of sexually abusing adults and minors and soliciting sex from the confessional.
- Comedian Bill Cosby was given an honorary degree in 1990 and it was rescinded in 2018 after the actor was accused by more than 60 women of rape and sexual assault.
- Jean Vanier, founder of L’Arche, an international federation of communities for the disabled, was honored with the Notre Dame Award in 1994. It was rescinded in 2020 when the organization had credible evidence that he sexually exploited six women.
Although he wasn’t always a radical abortion activist, Biden has been on a journey to the dark side throughout his political career. As abortion-extremist-in chief, he has used every avenue open to him to increase abortion’s availability, even illegally turning Veterans Affairs hospitals into killing centers and funding travel expenses for active-duty military members to travel for abortion.
One of his most recent abominations saw him making the sign of the cross as a Florida Democrat blasted the state’s law protecting babies with beating hearts.
He does not deserve to call himself Catholic, and he certainly doesn’t deserve the Laetare Medal.
Will you help me join the effort of the Sycamore Trust to ensure that Notre Dame strips him of this honor?
