30th Anniversary of Evangelium Vitae
Should be Marked with Prayer, Study and Action
March 12, 2025
Friends,
March 25 will mark the 30th anniversary of the publication of one of the most important documents for the Church and the pro-life movement: Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life).
St. John Paul II wrote the encyclical in 1995 to stir the world "to activate a great campaign in support of life " (EV #95) and to end the "war of the powerful against the weak" (EV #12).
Focusing on this important anniversary will give pro-lifers an opportunity to demonstrate how far we have come in 30 years to protect the lives of the unborn, through legislation, education, and direct intervention, and to bring healing to those wounded by abortion.
And it will also give us a platform for insisting that we have much farther to go to reach our ultimate goal of ending abortion and resisting efforts to see the elderly and infirm as burdens.
This document has been received with gratitude by Christians of all denominations and by others of good will who want to help end abortion. So we want to bring it again to the attention of the world.
There are many actions you and your church can take to celebrate this special day.
We can end abortion in our lifetime. Evangelium Vitae can help show us the way!
March 25, exactly nine months before we celebrate the birth of Jesus at Christmas, has also been designated by various nations and their Churches as the Day of the Unborn Child, because it marks when Jesus became one.
March 25 is also the Feast of the Annunciation. It was not a coincidence that The Gospel of Life was released on that date.
