Pray for Those Who Will Choose the Next Pope

Dear Friends,
The death of a pope is an event that is felt around the world. As Catholics and others pray for the soul of Pope Francis, our prayers are also needed for those who will choose his successor.
The papacy is not about any one man, but about the promise of Christ to always be with his Church and build her up on the confession of Faith made by St. Peter: “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God!”
The selection of the next pope is a sacred responsibility and we are called to unite in prayer for wisdom, clarity and fidelity to God’s truth for the 135 cardinals who will gather in a conclave to choose the next leader for the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.
The media is full of stories trying to predict who the next pope will be but the truth is, it can’t be predicted. As the saying goes, Those who talk don’t know and those who know don’t talk. Will the cardinals return to choosing a leader from Italy? Will we have our first African pope? Will the new pope continue Pope Francis’s progressive agenda, or return to emphasizing the eternal and immutable tenets of our faith?
We must pray that the cardinals will choose a successor who will teach with resounding clarity what the Church has always taught, will heal the wounds so many believers have suffered, and will “strengthen the brethren” in the unwavering mission of the Church.

On a personal note, I also ask you to join me in praying that the next pope restores the exercise of my sacramental priesthood? As so many of you have said, I am always a priest, and people always call me “Father.” The new pope will receive a request from me to end the persecution that some in the hierarchy have been carrying out.
