Urge Democrat Senators to Reopen Government

Dear Friends,
The continuing government shutdown could prompt some mothers to consider abortion for the babies they are carrying.
On Saturday, funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - SNAP - will run out. Funding for another food aid program, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children - better known as WIC - could run out of money Nov. 8.
Both of these programs are important for pregnant women and those with young children. Many of these mothers chose life against what looked like tough odds, and these assistance programs likely played a role in their decisions.
We need to make sure these mothers continue getting the help they need.
As you know, Democrats in the U.S. Senate are the problem. All the Republicans in the House and the Senate have voted repeatedly (like 13 times) to reopen the government, and are asking nothing in return, but the Democrats have all voted against reopening… with only one exception -- John Fetterman from Pennsylvania.
"As a committed Democrat, I’m dismayed my party is playing chicken with the food security of 42M Americans,” Fetterman said in a post on X this week.
The American Federation of Government Employees, the largest union representing federal workers, has urged the Democrats to end this cruel shutdown.
Now some people – who don’t understand how our government works – point out that the Republicans have the White House and control both the House and Senate in Congress.
While it’s true that Republicans have a majority in Congress, the bill that would reopen the government requires a super-majority (60 votes) in the Senate. The Republicans only have 53 seats.
They can’t do it without Democrat help, and the Democrats refuse.
We just need five Democrats with a conscience to vote in favor, and that’s where you come in.
If one or both of your U.S. senators is a Democrat, I’m hoping you will be willing to call his or her office and urge them to vote yes on the next vote.
Once again, lives could be on the line if SNAP and WIC run out of money.
And if one or both of your US Senators are Republican, call them too, and thank them for their efforts to reopen the government.
