Catholic bishop thanks people who filed contraception lawsuits

Tom Howell, Jr.

Washington Times

The Catholic archbishop in charge of promoting religious liberty expressed his “deep gratitude” to religious nonprofits and devout corporate owners who are challenging a mandate in President Obama’s health care law that requires most employers to insure contraception.

The declaration of support from Archbishop of Baltimore William E. Lori for the dozens of plaintiffs who are suing the Department of Health and Human Services coincides with the last day that citizens and organizations may comment on the Obama administration’s proposal to sever religious nonprofits from the requirement under the Affordable Care Act that contraception be provided to policyholders without a copayment.

HHS will wade through the comments that have been submitted since early February before issuing a final rule on how faith-based nonprofits must comply with the contraception mandate. Under Mr. Obama’s accommodation, the nonprofits would not have to pay for or manage any facet of the contraception coverage.

Opponents of the mandate say the Obama administration did not go far enough and that an exemption for churches and dioceses should be extended to all objectors.

Archbishop Lori on Monday offered special praise for more than a dozen corporations that have sued over the mandate, which may be headed for review by the Supreme Court.

“Their actions have been a source of encouragement, particularly because of their high rate of success in obtaining early injunctions to block the mandate,” Archbishop Lori said.
