SCOTUS decision on burial of abortion victims ‘a step in the right direction’

TITUSVILLE, FL -- Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today praised the U.S. Supreme Court for its opinion that the bodies of babies killed in abortion must be cremated or buried.

“If fetal remains need to be treated as human beings, it’s simply because a fetus is a human,” Father Pavone said. “The abortion industry doesn’t care about the baby in life or in death, so this is a step in the right direction.

“When we say that life is to be respected, we mean bodies, not just souls. the abortion industry, which cares for neither, throws these bodies out with the medical waste, or into dumpsters, or down the sewer, or into incinerators. But the bodies of aborted babies are the bodies of persons, and deserve our reverence,” Fr. Pavone explained.

The Supreme Court’s opinion today in Box vs. Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky upheld a portion of the law that Vice President Mike Pence signed when he was governor of Indiana.

“We’re grateful to Vice President Pence for his work on behalf of the unborn, both at the state and federal levels,” Father Pavone said.

Priests for Life has frequently been involved in efforts to bury babies whose remains have been found in trash bins and other locations. Following the discovery of the bodies of full-term babies killed by abortionist Kermit Gosnell in Philadelphia, Father Pavone tried to have the bodies released to Priests for Life for burial.

Noting that the Supreme Court allowed to stand a Seventh Circuit block on another portion of the Indiana law – a ban on abortions based on race, gender or disability – Father Pavone said, “we still have a long way to go to protect all babies from abortion, but today’s decision that babies are worthy of burial helps the pro-life cause by stressing the humanity of these tiny victims.”
