Illinois abortion expansion called “out of step” with U.S.

TITUSVILLE, FL -- With Illinois poised to pass a radical expansion of abortion in the state, Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, issued the following statement.

“The bill passed by the Illinois House, which is likely to pass the Senate and land on the desk of extremely pro-abortion Gov. Jay Pritzker, is more dangerous than the one enacted in New York. While New York used the broadly-defined ‘health exception’ to permit abortion on demand, the Illinois bill simply says that abortion is a ‘fundamental right.’ That’s it. No reason or ‘exception’ needed.

“This bill also removes protections not only from unborn children, but it does away with conscience rights, strips parental rights and eliminates the requirement to investigate deaths to mothers caused by botched abortions. Abortions will be legal through all nine months of pregnancy and for any reason and must be covered by insurance policies, including those administered by faith-based organizations.

“I wonder what would have become of the family of Tonya Reaves, who died in 2012 after a botched second-trimester abortion at a Chicago area Planned Parenthood. Her young son will grow up without a mother but at least the nation’s number one abortion business and the hospital where she died will have to pay him $2 million when he turns 18. Under this new law, women who die from abortion will be nothing more than the collateral damage of business as usual.”

Noting that the Illinois state motto is “State Sovereignty, National Union,’” Father Pavone said, “There’s no doubt lawmakers who passed this bill want their state to lead in abortion extremism, but they are out of step with the rest of the nation.”
