TITUSVILLE, FL -- Priests for Life National Director Frank Pavone today released the following statement:
“The U.S. House and Senate have introduced legislation to repeal the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act. Texas Rep. Chip Roy has introduced HR 5577 in the House and Utah Sen. Mike Lee introduced the Senate version, S 3107, to repeal the 1994 law that protects abortion businesses in ways no other businesses are protected, and which the Biden administration is using to silence peaceful pro-life activists such as Mark Houck and a group of pro-life activists currently in prison.
“State and federal laws already exist to protect abortion facilities from violence. There is no need for an additional law that also restricts peaceful activity, and that subjects prosecution to a subjective standard of whether someone seeking an abortion is being ‘intimidated’ by the presence of pro-life people who are hoping she will change her mind.
“When I think of the FACE Act, I recall a conversation I had with Mother Teresa when I visited her in India just weeks after President Bill Clinton had signed the bill into law. When I explained this new law to her, she looked at me and said, ‘Father, if we had that law here in India, I would have been thrown in jail many times! I go to the places where abortions are done and I take the women by the arm pull them away, and say, ‘Come with me; we will help you and your child!’
“Under FACE, Mother Teresa would be breaking the law!
“FACE is not only bad law, but it has a chilling effect on life-saving activity. Roe v. Wade is gone and FACE needs to go, too.”
