Fr. Frank's Statement for Juneteenth (June 19) in Selma, AL

Selma, AL. -- Joining pro-life activists in Selma, Alabama on Juneteenth (June 19) and then for a walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge the next day, Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, called on both law and grace to deal with the abortionists who still kill children legally in the womb.

For this occasion, Fr. Pavone released the following statement:

Abortionists are not our enemy; they are captive to the enemy, whom Scripture calls a liar and murderer. They do incredible damage to human life and to our society because of the lies they tell themselves -- lies that justify not only violence against children in the womb, but numerous other vices as well. You can't practice vice virtuously. Therefore, it is quite predictable that in those places where abortions are performed, you will find multiple violations of the law, whether it has to do with the manner in which patients are supposed to be treated, or the way in which money is handled, or any number of other things. The abortion industry is the most unregulated surgical industry in the nation, and must be brought to an end.

To accomplish this, we need the push of the law and the pull of grace. Existing laws must be enforced, and each state, through its appropriate public agencies, must exercise the courage necessary to enforce those laws -- and discipline those who break them -- regardless of the fact that it touches on the politically charged issue of abortion.

At the same time, we in the Church must work to call abortionists to repentance and to help them realize how damaged they are and how much healing and grace are available to them if they open their mind and heart to receive them. For decades, we at Priests for Life have worked to bring former abortionists and clinic workers to experience that grace and healing. This summer, in fact, we will hold a week of rehabilitation (August 7-15) in conjunction with the Society of Centurions precisely for that purpose.

With Church and state working together to fulfill their responsibilities, we can bring abortionists out of the damaging role they now play, and protect women, children, families and society from the ongoing scourge which is abortion.
