WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Norma McCorvey -- “Jane Roe” in the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion -- will be remembered and honored for her courageous journey during the 24th annual National Memorial for the Pre-born and Their Mothers and Fathers at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 19 at DAR Constitution Hall, Washington DC.

Ms. McCorvey, who died in February 2017, was working at an abortion mill in Dallas when the Rev. Flip Benham, founder of Operation Rescue, struck up a friendship with her that ultimately led to her conversion to the pro-life cause and to Christianity. When she later became Catholic, she called Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, the catalyst that brought her into the Church. Fr. Pavone received her into the Church in 1998 and also presided at her funeral service in February.

Father Pavone and the Rev. Benham’s sons, David and Jason, will remember their friend and give witness to her pro-life conversion during the interdenominational service that takes place each year on the morning of the March for Life.

In a video the Benham brothers recorded to promote the prayer service,  David Benham said, “We remember when she gave her heart to the Lord and got baptized in a swimming pool by our dad. We’re going to talk a little bit about that at the prayer service.”

Ms. McCorvey’s conversion to Christianity, then to Catholicism, “was sincere and I was honored to be part of that journey,” Father Pavone said. “I’m sorry she won’t be here to celebrate with me when we finally abolish legal abortion in this country, but I know she will be watching.”

Also at the service, Christian recording and YouTube artist Joyce Im Bartholomew will perform and Alan Sears, founder of Alliance Defending Freedom, will receive the 2018 National Pro-Life Recognition Award. Father Pavone will give the sermon.

The National Memorial is sponsored every year by the National Pro-Life Religious Council and Priests for Life. Co-sponsoring organizations this year include the Jubilee Campaign Law of Life Project; Life Issues Institute; City Life Center, Minneapolis, MNNational Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA) and Solidarity Health Share.

Tickets are not required and large groups can be easily accommodated at DAR Hall, which is located at 1776 D Street NW (at 18th Street) in Washington.

A Mass will be celebrated at 7:30 a.m. prior to the interdenominational service.
