WASHINGTON, D.C. – Most of the Pastoral Team of Priests for Life has traveled to the nation’s capital today to challenge Democratic members of the House to ensure that the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, H.R. 962, comes up for a vote.
“The Democrat-controlled House of Representatives has refused to bring this bill up for a vote, despite Republican members requesting a vote some 80 times on the House floor,” said National Director Father Frank Pavone. “A separate discharge petition that would allow a vote needs just 17 signatures from Democrats courageous enough to go on the record as opposing infanticide. These are the Democrats we will try to reach today.”
Walking the halls of Congress today with Father Frank are Janet Morana, executive director; Father Denis Wilde, OSA, associate director; Evangelist Alveda King, director of Priests for Life’s outreach Civil Rights for the Unborn; Youth Director Bryan Kemper, founder of Stand True Pro-Life Outreach, and Kevin Burke, co-founder of Rachel’s Vineyard. Approximately 50 pro-life activists and supporters will accompany the Priests for Life team.
“We have boots on the ground today to demand justice for the babies,” said Evangelist Alveda King. “This bill is not even about the babies in the womb. These are babies who have survived abortion and are newborn human beings. We shouldn’t have to plead for their rights, but we do.”
After visiting the congressional offices, the group will attend a 1 p.m. hearing on the bill in the Capitol Visitors Center.
Witnesses who will testify at the hearing, titled “End Infanticide: Examining the Born Alive Infants Protection Act,” will be Jill Stanek, who, while working as a nurse in Chicago, found a baby born alive after abortion and left alone to die; neonatologist Dr. Robin Pierucci; former abortion practitioner Dr. Kathi Aultman, and Tessa Longbons, a research associate at the Charlotte Lozier Institute.
“We know this bill will save lives,” said Mrs. Morana, who is also the co-founder of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign. “This should not be a partisan issue, as the majority of Americans support providing life-saving care for babies who survive abortion. If the Democrats in the House don’t support it, we would like to have them say why that is. Their constituents have a right to know.”
Father Pavone added, “It is also noteworthy that this lobbying effort is taking place on the day that citizens in the third and ninth districts of North Carolina have special elections for the U.S. House. Our event is a stark reminder that electing Democrats at this point in our history is a vote for infanticide. I don’t think partisan loyalties quite outweigh that.”
