TITUSVILLE, FL -- Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, issued the following statement regarding the Nov. 20 Democratic debate:
“In last night’s debate the Democrat presidential hopefuls were asked to address abortion, and predictably, they either sidestepped the question or outright lied.
“Sen. Amy Klobuchar said 70 percent of Americans support Roe v. Wade and 90 percent support public funding for Planned Parenthood. Both of these statement are false, as even the New York Times acknowledges.
“The American people are not with the Democrats on this. Roe v. Wade permits pregnancy through all nine months of pregnancy, and polls have shown that Americans do not agree with that.
“The Democrat position has gone far beyond what Americans support.”
Klobuchar, moreover, used the talking point that many of the Democrats repeat, namely, that they want to ‘codify’ Roe vs. Wade,” Fr. Pavone said. “Perhaps they don’t realize it, but the Courts have vastly weakened Roe, abandoning most of its tenets and shifting the justifications for it, none of which square with the Constitution. Moreover, ‘codifying’ Roe would mean codifying that the ‘abortion right’ is not absolute, and that the state can in fact ban it in the last few months of pregnancy. The Democrat Party does not accept that position; so why would they want to codify it??”
Father Pavone also noted that when asked if there is room in the Democrat party for a pro-life lawmaker, like Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, no candidates answered the question. “And with good reason, because as far as they and the party leadership are concerned, the answer is a resounding ‘No!’
“Americans are tired of their grandstanding and want concrete answers,” Father Pavone said. “We know they do not think there is room in the party for pro-lifers, so let’s hear them say that out loud.”
