TITUSVILLE, FL -- Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today appealed to supporters to contact their U.S. senators and House members to urge them to sign a friend-of-the-court brief in the U.S. Supreme Court case June Medical Services LLC vs. Gee.
The case pits an abortion business against the state of Louisiana, which passed a law safeguarding women’s health by mandating that abortionists have hospital admitting privileges.
“This case is about basic common sense,” Father Pavone said in his action alert to supporters. “If a medical emergency occurs in an abortion facility, why should abortionists be permitted to just wash their hands of the situation, as many have done, and have another doctor clean up their mess? They should be accountable before a problem arises.”
Father Pavone noted that this week, 197 members of Congress – 36 senators and 162 House members – filed an amicus brief in support of the abortionists.
“But pro-life members of Congress, who put women’s health above the profit margin of the abortion cartel, have a chance to sign on to a separate brief that supports Louisiana’s common-sense law, and that’s where everyone can help,” he said.
House Minority Whip Steve Scalise and Sen. John Kennedy are collecting signatures in their D.C. offices until Dec. 17.
Father Pavone emphasized, “We would love to see every pro-life member of the House and the Senate sign on to this brief. The voices of our Congressional representatives are meant to be our voices, and we stand with states that are enforcing commonsense restraints on the abortion industry.”
The Supreme Court is being asked to rule not only on the constitutionality of the admitting privileges law, but to also decide if abortionists and abortion businesses have the standing to challenge abortion restrictions in the name of their patients.
“Almost every law a state passes to protect women or the unborn is challenged by abortion sellers, Planned Parenthood being the most prominent,” Father Pavone said. “Of course the abortion industry would object to these laws because they will lose business! But the U.S. Constitution was not written to ensure that abortionists can make money. How the Court rules on this question will have far-reaching implications.”
