WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The winner of the 2020 Pro-Life Award, to be bestowed Friday at the National Memorial at DAR Constitution Hall here, has been an advocate for the unborn since she was a teenager.
Students for Life President Kristan Hawkins founded a pro-life club in her high school and then did the same thing at Bethany College, where she graduated summa cum laude in 2005.
She served on the Republican National Committee and was a presidential appointee to the Department of Health and Human Services during the administration of George W. Bush. After being recruited by Students for Life, she built the organization from a few student groups around the country to one that now boasts more than 1,200 chapters at colleges in all 50 states.
Ms. Hawkins is a published author and frequent media contributor, and hosts a weekly podcast, “Explicitly Pro-Life.” She is a wife and mother of four who also advocates for awareness of the disease cystic fibrosis, with which two of her children have been diagnosed.
“Kristan Hawkins is one of the most effective pro-life leaders today,” said Father Frank Pavone, President of the National Pro-Life Religious Council, whose board bestows the annual honor. “I have known her a long time, and never cease to be amazed at what she accomplishes day by day. I salute and congratulate her. She is more than deserving of this award.”
Ms. Hawkins, who will speak at the 26th annual interdenominational prayer service, said: “Every day in the pro-life community, our commitment to mothers and their children – born and preborn – motivates us to serve, and I’ve been inspired by so many that I’ve had the honor to meet and stand alongside. As head of Students for Life of America, I work with a dedicated team and selfless students who contribute to this calling of fighting to defend, educate, and equip this pro-life generation and their peers, who have been targeted by a predatory abortion industry.
“This award means so much to me, my team, and our Students for Life leaders on more than 1,200 campuses because it represents a special acknowledgment of a job well done – not finished – but well done.”
The 26th annual 2020 National Memorial will take place from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday – the morning of the March for Life – at DAR Constitution Hall, 1776 D Street NW, at 18th Street. A Mass will precede the service, at 7:30 a.m.
Father Pavone, who is also national director of Priests for Life, will deliver the sermon, and singer Joyce Im Bartholomew will perform.
The prayer service is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required and because of the size of the historic and beautiful Constitution Hall, the event is perfect for large groups.
Serving on the Host Committee for this year’s service, in addition to Father Pavone, are Ernie Ohloff, director of outreach, National Right to Life Committee; Evangelist Alveda King, director of the Priests for Life outreach “Civil Rights for the Unborn;” Bradley Mattes, president and CEO Life Issues Institute; Dick Bott, founder of Bott Radio Network, and Sherley Bott; Rich Bott, CEO, Bott Radio Network, and Faye Bott.
Co-sponsoring organizations include Life Issues Institute, the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates and two Catholic parishes, St. Mary of Czestochowa Catholic Church, Bound Brook, N.J. and Stella Maris Catholic Church, Sullivan’s Island, S.C.
“Prayer is our best tool in the arsenal to end the scourge of abortion,” said Bradley Mattes, President of Life Issues Institute. “And what better way to begin a full day of pro-life activities in Washington. Join us as we seek God’s favor and grace to end the killing of unborn babies.”

Priests for Life (www.EndAbortion.US) is the world’s largest Catholic pro-life organization dedicated exclusively to ending abortion. Pro-life efforts are working. The abortion rate in America is the lowest it has been since Roe v. Wade and in recent years states have passed more than 400 laws to protect the unborn. The number of freestanding abortion clinics in the U.S. has dropped from 2179 in 1991 down to 710 today, and President Trump has placed 187 (and counting) pro-life judges on the federal bench.
