Rest in Peace, Fr. Dennis Cooney

It is with great sadness that the Diocese of Venice announces the passing of Father Dennis Cooney, Pastor for 19 years of St. Raphael Parish in Lehigh Acres. He was 71. 

Bishop Frank J. Dewane said "Father Cooney had passion for his ministry. Please pray for the repose of his soul of Father, for the people of St. Raphael who found inspiration by his good work, and for his family for whom this loss is particularly personal."

For the Diocese, Father was Moderator of the Respect Life Office and taught theology as part of the Diocesan Diaconate Formation Program. He was also Parochial Vicar at Ss. Peter and Paul the Apostles Parish in Bradenton.

In light of the ongoing restrictions caused by the ongoing pandemic, a public memorial Mass will be held at a later date. 

Father was ordained in 1974 in Washington DC, for the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. He served in a parish in Washington and was later an instructor then president of the Oblate College. 

Father Cooney joined the Diocese of a Venice in 1994 and served as Parochial Vicar at Ss. Peter and April the Apostles Parish in Bradenton. He was incardinated into the Diocese in 1996. 

Father was a dynamic and popular speaker on theological issues and was called upon numerous times to talk to various groups within the Diocese. 

A member of the Board of Priests for Life he also served as spiritual advisor to several local groups. 

He is survived by numerous family and friends

and let perpetual light shine upon him.
