TITUSVILLE, FL -- Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today thanked the Tennessee Legislature for passing a bill to protect babies once a heartbeat has been detected.
“The presence of a heartbeat in the unborn child is a clear sign of life,” Father Pavone said. “The fact that abortion stops a beating heart gives many people reason to stop and re-evaluate their position on this issue.
“I look forward to the day Gov. Bill Lee signs this bill into law.”
Noting the criticism from the pro-abortion ACLU that the legislation is unconstitutional, Father Pavone said that claim is spurious.
“There is no right to abortion found in the U.S. Constitution. The word isn’t there, and the idea that our Constitution permits the killing of a baby is both absurd and offensive.
“Moreover, in Tennessee in 2014, voters passed an amendment asserting that nothing in the state constitution ‘secures or protects a right to abortion or the funding of an abortion,’” Father Pavone said. “The amendment, challenged in court, of course, by Planned Parenthood, ultimately was upheld by a unanimous decision of the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
“We need more judges on more federal courts willing to uphold the Constitution without reading into it any rights that aren’t there. The best way to ensure the appointment and confirmation of these judges is to re-elect pro-life President Trump and the Republican Senate.”
Priests for Life (EndAbortion.US) is the world’s largest Catholic pro-life organization dedicated exclusively to ending abortion. Pro-life efforts are working. The abortion rate in America is the lowest it has been since Roe v. Wade and in recent years states have passed more than 400 laws to protect the unborn. The number of freestanding abortion clinics in the U.S. has dropped from 2179 in 1991 down to 710 today, and President Trump has placed more than 200 (and counting) pro-life judges on the federal bench.
