TITUSVILLE, FL -- Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, is challenging the Biden campaign to join President Trump in calling for the presidential debates to begin before the start of early voting.

“Under the current debate schedule, early voting will begin 25 days before the first time President Trump and candidate Joe Biden face off for a debate,” Father Pavone said. “This is unacceptable for both campaigns.”

By the first debate, scheduled for Sept. 29, 8 million people in 16 states will have been eligible for early voting. The second presidential debate is scheduled for Oct. 15, by which time 35 million people in 29 states may have cast their vote. By the third debate, scheduled for Oct. 22 – less than two weeks before the election – 49 million people in 34 states potentially could have cast their ballots.

The Trump Campaign wrote a letter to the Commission on Presidential Debates, asking for a fourth debate to be scheduled in early September or, failing that, to have the third and final debate rescheduled for that time. The Commission on Thursday declined the request but said it would reconsider if the Biden campaign agreed to the new timetable.

“The most obvious reality the debate schedule overlooks is the fact that early voting has surged dramatically,” Father Pavone said. “In the 1980 Presidential election, only 5 percent of the electorate had voted prior to Election Day, and the first Presidential debate was even earlier than this year’s. But by 2016, an incredible 41 percent cast their ballots before Election Day.

“This year, with so many people concerned about crowds, the number of early voters is sure to skyrocket and is likely to be more than half the voters. It makes no sense to have undecided voters choosing a president until they have as much information about the candidates as possible, including how well they can think on their feet.”

The abortion rate in America is the lowest it has been since Roe v. Wade and in recent years states have passed more than 400 laws to protect the unborn. The number of freestanding abortion clinics in the U.S. has dropped from 2179 in 1991 down to 710 today, and President Trump has placed 200 pro-life judges on the federal bench.
