TITUSVILLE, FL - “In a nation where freedom of speech is guaranteed, we shouldn’t need Congress to take up a Free Speech Act, but I applaud the legislators who have recognized that we do,” Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, said today.
House Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.), Rep. Jody Hice (R-Ga.), and Republican Conference Vice Chairman Mike Johnson (R-La.) announced the reintroduction of the Free Speech Fairness Act, a bill designed to restore First Amendment rights to religious leaders by repealing the Johnson Amendment.
“Priests for Life is one of the organizations that supports this bill, which was first introduced in the 114th Congress,” Father Pavone said. “Clergy and religious leaders have for too long let fear of the IRS stifle their freedom – and their duty – to speak about politics from the pulpit.
“The Johnson Amendment needs to go.”
Father Pavone wrote extensively on the Johnson Amendment in his 2015 book Abolishing Abortion (Thomas Nelson).
“I was so grateful to President Donald Trump for talking about the injustice of the amendment during his 2016 campaign and for taking executive action regarding it during his tenure,” Father Pavone said. “I’m grateful to all Congress members who will continue this fight for free speech.”
Priests for Life (EndAbortion.US) is the world’s largest Catholic pro-life organization dedicated exclusively to ending abortion.
