TITUSVILLE, FL -- Priests for Life is urging pastors and all citizens to speak out against the nomination of California Attorney General Xavier Becerra to be the new secretary of the federal Department of Health and Human Services.
National Director Father Frank Pavone; Executive Director Janet Morana, and Youth Outreach Director Bryan Kemper have made Becerra’s record on abortion clear through broadcasts, op-eds, communications with supporters, social media, and messages to churches.
“The Department of HHS is key to the nation’s pro-life policies,” Fr. Pavone pointed out, “and under President Trump, that department’s staff has been a who’s-who of pro-life advocates. Now that is threatened. As we said throughout the election cycle, elections don’t just determine who sits in the Oval Office, but what kind of radicals and extremists sit in all the other offices of the federal government.”
As a member of Congress representing Los Angeles, abortion champion Becerra voted against the partial-birth abortion ban (while then-Senator Joe Biden actually voted for it), and also opposed the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act and the Unborn Victims of Violence Act. He consistently has voted for abortion funding, and has opposed conscience rights, even going to far as to try to force pregnancy centers to refer for abortions. That issue reached the Supreme Court in the case of NIFLA vs. Becerra.
When Becerra became attorney general, he continued the prosecution which his predecessor, abortion champion Kamala Harris, carried out against the undercover journalists who exposed Planned Parenthood’s business of selling body parts of aborted babies. Becerra also led a coalition of other attorneys general in opposing pro-life bills in various states and said that even if Roe vs. Wade were overturned, people should not be prosecuted for violating pro-life laws.
“Xavier Becerra is the worst possible choice to be in charge of our nation’s health services,” Fr. Pavone said. “Not only is he an apostle of abortion, but he has no background in the medical profession. He will use that office to turn the United States into a nation made in the image and likeness of the abortion cartel.”
Becerra’s confirmation hearings will take place this week in the Senate Finance and Health Committees. Fr. Pavone, Janet Morana and Bryan Kemper also signed on to a letter with various other pro-life leaders to the chairmen and ranking members of those committees, asking them to reject his nomination.
The letter concluded: “Mr. Becerra has proven himself to be an enemy of the health of women and the unborn. He cannot be entrusted with our national health programs and policies and is not qualified to serve as Secretary of Health and Human Services.”
