The Equality Act (H.R. 5) introduces radical expansions in abortion policy, and suppression of religious freedom, under the disguise of omissions and deceptive language.
Federal law makes an exception to abortion in various places where otherwise it would be mandatory to fund it, but the Equality Act drops that exception, putting abortion on par with legitimate medical procedures.
H.R. 5 would amend the Civil Rights Act to prohibit discrimination based on an expanded definition of “sex” that includes any condition or treatment related to pregnancy and childbirth (thereby including abortion). It would establish abortion on demand at any stage of pregnancy as a protected right by outlawing “pregnancy discrimination.”
Healthcare workers – along with all the rest of us -- would no longer be protected by conscience rights, even under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. All laws passed on the state level to protect mothers and the unborn by regulating abortion would be nullified because, again, they would be seen as discriminatory.
The Equality Act reverses decades-long, bipartisan federal policy as well as the laws in place in most of the states. It should be flatly rejected.
Priests for Life is mobilizing its supporters, as well as pastors across the nation, to communicate with their Representatives to oppose this bill. Our action alerts and broadcasts will continue focusing on it in the coming days.
