“Republicans in the House are standing up for American taxpayers and working to ensure that hard-earned tax dollars are not funding abortion,” Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, said today as an effort continued to bring H.R. 18, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, to the floor for a vote.
The act would protect the Hyde Amendment, which since 1976 has protected tax dollars from being used to pay for most abortions. Its passage is particularly important now as the House begins work on a proposed budget that does not include Hyde protections.
Earlier this week Republican and pro-life leaders including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, House Whip Steve Scalise, House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, and Reps. Chris Smith – who sponsored the bill - Andy Harris, Kat Cammack and Michelle Fischbach made unanimous consent requests, asking Speaker Nancy Pelosi to allow a vote on the bill.
“Every day the House is in session from now until the August recess, Republicans will ask for a vote on this bill,” Father Pavone said. “Hyde used to enjoy the support of influential members of Congress, including Joe Biden when he was a senator. But now the Democrats’ abortion extremism excludes the wishes of a majority of Americans who do not want to pay for abortion.
“I applaud the 179 representatives who have co-sponsored this legislation and thank those House members who are standing up for their constituents by calling for a vote. I remind Democrats that the November 2022 elections are not far off and voters have long memories. Their opposition to the Hyde Amendment is far outside the mainstream, and will not help them at the ballot box.”
