Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, released the following statement today:
“It’s no surprise that every House Democrat but one voted this morning in favor of removing every protection for the unborn and their mothers by approving H.R. 3755, the Women’s Health Protection Act. As Rep. Beth Van Duyne (R-Texas) noted in her statement prior to the vote, ‘Make no mistake, no woman is protected under this bill.’
“In fact, as we know from our experience with Rachel’s Vineyard and Silent No More, the provisions of this bill would unleash incalculable damage and despair on women and their families nationwide, not to mention the crushing and dismembering of their babies.
“Two key points among many arise this morning:
“First, no Republican voted for this measure and every Democrat but one voted for it. Like it or not, the divide over abortion has become more and more partisan. In talking about this vote, news outlets should not simply say, ‘the House’ voted to accept this extreme abortion measure. It wasn’t simply ‘the House.’ It was the Democrats, and their extremism on abortion deserves to be named and sharply criticized. And it will be a major midterm election issue.
“Second, why don’t the Democrats describe what they defend? Despite all the speeches in favor of this bill, we look in vain for any description of the abortion procedure: The suction tube, in which a baby’s heart can still be beating for up to a minute when it’s sucked into the collection jar, or the forceps that dismember and decapitate the baby. These are not our words; they are the words of the abortionists to whom the Democrats want to give free rein. They’ll protect them, they’ll fund them, but they won’t dare quote them.
“We are grateful that the U.S. Senate will be a firewall against this radical bill, and grateful for the role of the filibuster in saving America from such dangerous legislation.”
