“The Roe vs. Wade decision issued in 1973 was wrong not only constitutionally, historically, and morally, but also medically,” said Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life. “In fact, it literally skipped over hundreds of years of scientific knowledge about the child in the womb.”
Legal briefs submitted by scientists and physicians to the Supreme Court on behalf of the state of Mississippi in the current Dobbs case (reviewing a law protecting babies from abortion from 15 weeks on) demonstrate, furthermore, how the understanding of fetal development has advanced since 1973.
- Scientists now agree that human life begins at fertilization.
- Babies in the womb are able to feel pain much earlier than was presumed in 1973.
“Roe v. Wade claimed ignorance as to whether the child in the womb is a human being. Why, however, did the decision ignore over 400 years of published medical research which established the fact that the child in the womb is indeed a human being whose life began at fertilization?,” asked Father Pavone. “Justice Blackmun relied on ancient medicine, and then claimed ignorance about whether the life in the womb is human.
The briefs submitted in the Dobbs case likewise point out that second- and third-trimester abortion are much riskier for mothers than earlier ones, hence giving more weight to the states’ interests in protecting women’s health via laws like the one Mississippi passed.
Priests for Life is planning a press conference at 10 a.m. Nov. 30 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., to highlight the many things that have changed since Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided.
Father Pavone’s insights on the abortion issue and the Mississippi law can be seen from recent interviews here and here.
Oral arguments in Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization will be heard in the Supreme Court Dec. 1. Priests for Life is helping to organize rallies that day in support of Mississippi.
Priests for Life (EndAbortion.US) is the world’s largest Catholic pro-life organization dedicated exclusively to ending abortion.
