Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, has given what is believed to be the first blessing in the newly created metaverse, offering prayers for everyone who will enter the new world that has been described as Internet 3.0, and bestowing a special blessing on Priests for Life Social Media Manager Robert Collins, who is charting the path forward with Father Frank.
“Father Pavone has always embraced new technology, and we believe his blessing was the first time a priest has prayed for those who will follow him into the fascinating new world of person-to-person engagement,” Collins said.
Father Pavone described the metaverse as the next generation of the internet, a place where people can meet that goes beyond a Zoom call.
“People are able to interact in the metaverse by using avatars,” Father Pavone said. “So rather than looking at someone’s face in a box on a screen, you can be in the same room with each other, virtually.”
Father Pavone said he is aware that some have raised concerns about the metaverse.
“Anything can be abused,” he said, “but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be used.”
A $300 device called an oculus is required to get into the metaverse, so it’s uncertain how quickly people will populate this new embodied internet.
Facebook, which has been redubbed Meta, is helping to lead the way into this new world.
