KISSIMMEE, FL -- Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, and Janet Morana, Executive Director, today thanked Florida Gov. DeSantis and all pro-life legislators and activists in the state for protecting unborn babies in the womb from 15 weeks on.
“This law is more than wishful thinking,” Father Pavone said. “All indications from the Supreme Court point to Mississippi’s 15-week law being upheld, paving the way for this protection for our unborn brothers and sisters in Florida and other states whose legislators recognize the sanctity of life.
“At Priests for Life today, we are all proud to be Floridians, and very pleased to have such a pro-life governor.” He and Mrs. Morana attended the bill signing at Nacion de Fe Church.
Mrs. Morana pointed out that the law, “Reducing Fetal and Infant Mortality” (CS/HB5), also will protect mothers.
“Most of the women who have died from abortion in recent years were 15 weeks or beyond in their pregnancies,” she said. “The abortion procedure most commonly used in the second trimester – dismemberment – is brutal to the baby and extremely hazardous for the mother. This law will save lives of both moms and babies.”
Current Florida law allows abortion to 24 weeks, with more than 4,100 abortions performed in 2021 beyond 13 weeks.
Father Pavone noted that the new law brings Florida into closer alignment with abortion laws in most of the rest of the world, and he called it a good starting point for protecting babies.
“Whether you look at the methods used, the dangers to the mother, the state of public opinion, the scientific evidence that the baby feels pain, and many other factors, this bill makes sense,” he said. “The baby at 15 weeks gestation is six inches tall, responds to light touch, and her heart has already beat more than 15 million times.”
