“The only way to save America, according to Joe Biden, is to bring back legal abortion throughout the land, and to remove any rules about when and how the unborn can be killed.”
That was Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, reacting to Biden’s speech to the Democrat faithful on Tuesday in Washington.
Biden managed to sidestep the real challenges facing the nation – crime, inflation, shortages of critical items – to make a promise that seemed more about assuaging the abortion profiteers who carry the Democrats in their deep pockets. He promised that if the midterm elections yield a Democrat-controlled House and Senate, he would send the new Congress an abortion bill that would “codify Roe,” and when Congress passes it back to him, he would sign it in January “50 years after Roe was first decided the law of the land.”
“That wording points out the first problem with Roe: The Court presumed to make law. As the Dobbs case made clear, that runs afoul of the Constitution. Apparently, the Democrat Party doesn’t care.
“Moreover, we already know all about the abortion bill the Democrats want to pass,” Father Pavone said. “They want to remove every single protection for the unborn and their mothers on every level of government, and they want to wipe out conscience rights for healthcare professionals who do not want to have the blood of the innocents on their hands.
“That does not ‘codify Roe,’ which a) permitted the states to protect the unborn in the final months of pregnancy; b) said the abortion right was not absolute; and c) said the state does have an interest in fetal life.
“The Democrats, on the other hand, want no limits on the abortion ‘right,’ which they consider absolute, and give no recognition whatsoever to the existence or value of the baby,” Father Pavone explained.
Father Pavone noted that when Biden spoke this week about the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, when Biden was a freshman senator from Delaware, he neglected to mention that at the time, he felt the decision went too far. In 1981, he also supported a constitutional amendment that would have allowed states to overturn Roe. His about-face on abortion was complete when he ran for president in 2020 and abandoned his longtime support for the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits federal funds from being used to pay more most abortions.
“I agree with Joe Biden on one thing,” Father Pavone said. “Everyone who cares about the unborn and cares about America needs to get out and vote. We can’t let the abortion cartel and its puppets in Washington prevail.”
